Does a Regular Blood Test Check for Pregnancy?

I asked my doctor for a blood test, but she ordered the usual ones. Does a normal blood panel include a pregnancy check, or do I need to ask for a specific test separately? I want to know if I'm covered.

A routine blood test does not check for pregnancy. Pregnancy detection requires a specific test measuring beta-hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), ordered separately.

Standard blood panels, including CBC, LFT, RFT, thyroid, and blood sugar, do not include hCG. If your doctor ordered a routine panel without explicitly mentioning a pregnancy test, it almost certainly wasn’t included.

The test for pregnancy is called serum beta-hCG or quantitative hCG. It’s available at most diagnostic labs in India (SRL, Dr. Lal PathLabs, and Thyrocare) without a prescription. It’s more sensitive than a urine home test and can detect pregnancy as early as 7-10 days after conception.
