How should I manage recurrent kidney stones and when is surgery necessary

I am Sanjay, 51 years old. I have been experiencing kidney stone problems since 2015. Initially, I had 4.5 mm stones and took allopathic and homeopathic medicines, which helped temporarily. Over the years, the pain recurred multiple times, and last year, sonography revealed four stones. I tried Ayurvedic treatment, which kept me pain-free until recently, when I felt mild pain near my testicles. A new sonography showed only one stone, but a doctor advised a CT scan for confirmation. I am concerned about recurrent stones and their potential complications and want to know whether surgery is necessary now, what the safest procedure is, and how urgent it is to remove the stones.”

Kidney stones are unpredictable and often recur. Ultrasound alone is not a definitive test, as CT scans provide a more accurate diagnosis.

Your current CT shows a stone in the ureter and multiple small stones in the left kidney. Any stone causing obstruction or symptoms should ideally be removed to prevent complications such as severe pain, infection, or kidney damage.

Non-obstructing stones may be monitored, but they can also be removed during the same procedure to avoid future problems. The recommended procedure is laser stone fragmentation via RIRS, where a small camera is inserted into the kidney, stones are powdered with a laser, and a temporary stent is placed for urine flow.

The surgery typically takes about an hour, and discharge is usually the next day. Pain is managed with anesthesia, and proper pre- and post-operative care ensures safety and quick recovery.”
