Kidney stones often give early warning signs before the classic severe pain starts, but they are subtle and many people miss them.
In the early phase, patients may notice mild flank discomfort, a vague heaviness in the back, or intermittent pain that comes and goes. Some also experience increased urinary frequency, burning sensation, or a feeling of incomplete emptying if the stone is moving lower in the urinary tract. Occasionally, there can be microscopic blood in urine even before any pain is felt.
The intense, unbearable pain usually happens when the stone starts obstructing urine flow more significantly or moves suddenly through the ureter.
We often see that if patients seek evaluation at the early warning stage, stones can sometimes be managed much more easily, even without emergency situations. Simple imaging like ultrasound can help detect them early and prevent that severe pain phase
