The preventive measure of Urinary Infections

Urinary tract infections are the most common kind of bacterial infection. More than 50% of women suffer from this infection at least once in their lifetime. However, there are many ways you can prevent UTIs from occurring in the first place. Some of the preventive measures are:

  • Drink plenty of liquids.Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, to dilute urine and support more frequent urination, which flushes bacteria from your urinary tract. Moreover, increasing water intake can halve your chance of experiencing a recurrent UTI.
  • Urinate often.Urinate every two to three hours in order to flush out bacteria from your urinary tract before an infection has a chance to occur.Do not try to hold your urine to the point when your bladder feels full. The more time urine remains in your bladder, the more likely bacteria will multiply.
  • Wipe from front to back. While either urinating or moving your bowels, it’s very important to wipe from the front to the back direction. This prevents spreading bacteria from the anal area to the vagina and urethra.
  • Quickly urinate after intercourse.Vaginal intercourse may bring in bacteria from the genital area and anus into the bladder. Urinating afterward flush your bladder and decreases the risk of UTI.
  • Drink water after intercourse. It’s important to drink a full glass of water after intercourse to help flush bacteria from your system and prevent UTI.
  • Clean the genital area.Cleaning can reduce the presence of bacteria, and the chances of pulling bacteria into the urethra and into the bladder during intercourse.
  • Rethink your birth control.A spermicide, diaphragm,or spermicide-lubricated condom can increase the chances of getting a UTI because they all may contribute to bacterial growth.
  • Use a personal lubricant.Friction at the time of intercourse can now and then irritate the urethra and introduce bacteria that cause urinary tract infections. You can use a small amount of water-based lubrication during sex to reduce friction and the risk of UTI.
