Common digestive disorders

Digestive disorders have become common with the onset of the sedentary lifestyle. More and more people are engaging in poor eating and lifestyle habits that interfere with the digestive system. Many digestive disorders have the same symptoms and it might become difficult to identify the main cause.

Crohn’s Disease:It is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This disease that may attack any part of the digestive tract, however, it mainly attacks the terminal ileum that connects the end of the small intestine to the beginning of the colon.

Genetic heredity can be a major cause. The signs and symptoms of Crohn's disease involve diarrhea, abdominal pain, bleeding from the rectum, loss of weight and fever. Pain relievers, immunosuppressants, and surgery are common treatment methods.

Ulcerative Colitis:It is also a part of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It mainly affects the large intestine or the colon.

Sometimes the immune system mistakes food we eat for invaders. This results in the development of sores or ulcers in the colon. The signs and symptoms may include frequent bowel movements, diarrhea, bloody stool, or abdominal pain or cramps.

It can be treated by eliminating foods that trigger the condition. If the situation becomes complex, surgical treatment is performed.

Hemorrhoids:It is a condition in which the blood vessels present at the end of the digestive tract gets inflamed. This can be painful and result in bloody stool and itching. This can be caused as a result of constipation, diarrhea, hard bowel movement, lack of fiber.

It can be efficiently treated by incorporating fiber-rich food, having more water, including physical activity. In case of severe symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.

Anal Fissures:Wear & tear in the lining of the anal is called anal fissures. It is mainly caused by straining in a bowel movement or even diarrhea. The symptoms may be like hemorrhoids that include bloody stools, painful bowel movement.

It can be treated by having a fiber-rich diet (it makes stool bulky and soft), drinking more water and sitz baths. Medical treatments such as medicines to relax sphincter muscles and some topical anesthetics. Surgery is recommended in severe situations.

Diverticulitis:These are small pouches that can form in the digestive system due to the weakened layer. It is common in the colon. The pouches can become inflamed and show symptoms such as abdominal pain and fever. Obesity and low fiber diet can be the culprits.

Less severe conditions of diverticulitis can be treated with antibiotics and a liquid diet to avoid pressure on the colon. A fiber-rich diet can help the condition heal.
