Hymenoplasty is a very popular term for surgery to bring back the integrity of the hymen. What is hymen? A hymen is a thin, pinkish membrane that partially covers the vaginal entrance. It is located just inside the vagina approximately half an inch inside. Actually, it is a part of the vulva which is the gateway to the vagina. The function of the hymen is not precisely known but has been projected as a vaginal barrier against external sources of infection until puberty. Rupture of the hymen usually occurs during the first sexual experience. However, the hymen may be torn because of strenuous activities like bicycling, horseback riding and gymnastics. Use of tampons may also rupture a hymen early. Some women are even born without a trace of a hymen.
The procedure is done under general or local anesthesia according to the choice of patients. Patients are placed in the lithotomic position. The hymenoplasty is done first by uniting the torn remnants of the hymen. A transverse incision is then made in the vestibular mucosa posterior to the vaginal wall. The posterior vaginal wall is raised as a flap and superficial muscles are reefed. The posterior vaginal mucosa is tightened by creating rugae. Then, through the incision in the vestibular mucosa, the bulbospongiosus muscles are dissected on either side and reefing is performed. The rugs are created on vaginal mucosa. Your surgeon holds the tissue and goes for stitching from the superior end to the interior end. Many vertical and crosswise rugae are created through this technique until the vagina is tight. Some ointment is applied and no dressing is given. Post operation, patients are advised to clean the area and apply the ointment. Simple painkillers are given for pain relief. Some antibiotics are also given.
Short-term medications: Your doctor may give you an antifungal medication for three to seven days to clear a yeast infection. Antifungal medications are available as creams, ointments, tablets, and suppositories. These medications are available by a prescription or an over-the-counter form.
For about a week, hymenoplasty patients may feel pain and slightly bloody discharge occasionally. After one week generally patient starts feeling comfortable.
When the hymen is restored, the women will be able to feel more fullness in intercourse and they will be able to attain a higher possibility of orgasm during sex. The procedure time and recovery time is very short.
