Have a laxative. Take a laxative, in the form of pills or liquid on the previous night of your colonoscopy.

Use an enema kit. You may require to use an over-the-counter enema kit at night before the exam or a few hours before the exam to get your colon empty.

Adjust your medications. Discuss with your doctor about your medications.


During a colonoscopy, a sedative is given to minimize any discomfort a colonoscope is inserted into your rectum to check for any oddity in your entire colon. This test is done to find changes or abnormalities in the colon and rectum. A small video camera at the tip of the tube allows the doctor to observe the inside of the entire large intestine. If needed, polyps or another kind of abnormal tissue can be removed at the time of colonoscopy. Biopsies are also done. A colonoscopy takes around 30 to 60 minutes.
