Phimosis can be very painful and may affect life’s productivity. Read below to understand all about phimosis.

Causes  of phimosis

Phimosis usually occurs in uncircumcised males, commonly in young ones than adults.  However, in male babies between two and six years of age, the foreskin gets detached from the head of the penis on its own. In adults, it may need medical attention if the attached foreskin is causing issues. A few common causes of phimoses are lichen sclerosis, lichen planus, psoriasis, eczema, foreskin trauma, rough handling of the foreskin, not maintaining proper hygiene or frequent urinary tract infections.

Phimosis can result in serious conditions if not treated on time or promptly.  Most times phimosis can be asymptomatic, but in other cases, it can lead to infection in the penis referred to as balanitis. This is a type of inflammation that occurs on both gland and foreskin of the penis. If you are experiencing an odd sign in the genital area like thick fluid build-up, discomfort during intercourse, pain while urinating, itchiness, redness, or foul smell, consult a nearby urologist to get a thorough diagnosis along with the best-suited treatment. Phimosis Diagnosis & Treatment

The diagnosis for phimosis may include physical examination, where a urologist will ask about your medical history and may ask you to explain the symptoms you are experiencing. The doctor can evaluate the penis by pressing the glans or checking the foreskin of the penis. There is a possibility the doctor may recommend a few lab tests such as swab culture taken from the foreskin, urine culture, and blood test to detect any underlying cause.

After a thorough diagnosis, the doctor may advise the best circumcision treatment to cure phimosis. There are a few techniques that are usually performed to circumcise the penis:

Stapler or ZSR circumcision– A medical instrument referred to as a stapler is used during this technique to remove the foreskin of the penis. The doctor puts the instrument on the penis and presses it to circumcise the penis. Once the skin is removed, a silicone ring is left behind, eventually falling off after the foreskin is healed properly.

Laser circumcision– This is a modern technique and minimally invasive as compared to other techniques for circumcision. In this procedure, a laser beam is used precisely to cut the foreskin of the penis. It is a daycare procedure, and patients can go home on the same day of the surgery.

Traditional circumcision– This procedure is a conventional method, in which a sharp knife is used to detach the foreskin from the glans of the penis. This is an old technique that has risks involved, such as bleeding, infection, or long recovery duration. Open circumcision is advised in rare cases when others techniques can not be performed. Recovery after phimosis treatment

The phimosis treatment, i.e., circumcision, may take 25-34 minutes. This is an average duration that may differ depending on the severity of the condition and the type of technique used during the surgical procedure. An individual can resume normal activities the same day of the surgery. However, the complete recovery may take two to three weeks. The doctor may prescribe some medication to support the healing process and suggest a few tips for a faster recovery duration, such as:

  • Avoid strenuous activities post-surgery for at least two weeks
  • Do not indulge in intercourse for at least three to four weeks until fully recovered
  • Avoid smoking and consumption of alcohol

Benefits of the circumcised penis

Undergoing circumcision can reduce the vulnerability of getting frequent infections and other issues associated with it. A few benefits of circumcision are:

  • Easy to maintain penile hygiene
  • This prevents conditions like phimosis, balanitis, balanoposthitis, or paraphimosis from developing
  • There are minimal chances of penile infections, sexually transmitted infections, or diseases
  • Increase in sensation
