Things You Need to Know About Colorectal Surgery

Colorectal surgery is done to repair any damage to the colon, rectum, and anus due to diseases of the lower digestive tract, like cancer, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Causes may include Injury, obstruction, and ischemia also that may require bowel surgery. Sometimes, masses and scar tissue grow inside the rectum and creates blockages that stop normal elimination of feces. Some other diseases like diverticulitis and ulcerative colitis may cause damage in the rectum. Surgical elimination of the damaged area may cure the problem and make your bowel function normally.


Flexible sigmoidoscopy,

A flexible tube with a miniature camera is inserted into the rectum to the lining of the rectum and the sigmoid colon.


The procedure is quite similar to the flexible sigmoidoscopy, except the flexible tube observes the entire intestinal tract.Y our doctor may give you sedatives for your comfort.

Lower GI series

It is a series of x rays of the colon and rectum that can identify ulcers, cysts, polyps, and cancer. A barium enema is given to the patient. The barium coats the intestinal tract and makes any signs of disease easier to observe on x rays.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

MRI is done both before and during surgery; it allows the doctor to decide the precise margins for resections of the colon so that they can remove all of the diseased tissue.

Types of surgeries:


Colectomy includes surgical removal of any extent of the colon, generally segmental resection. In some cases, the whole large intestine is removed.


In the procedure, your surgeon makes a hole in your abdominal wall and pulls one end of the colon through the opening to treat a number of colon and rectal conditions.

Endoscopic Surgery

Endoscopic surgery allows your surgeon to look inside your colon and carry out procedures without making major incisions.


During a hemorrhoidectomy, your doctor makes incisions around your anus to remove the hemorrhoids under local anesthesia.

Surgery is done to remove the colon to treat ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

Internal Sphincterotomy

An internal sphincterotomy is done to treat anal fissures.


Rectopexy is a surgical procedure to treat rectal prolapse.
