प्रक्रिया की शुरुआत हार्मोनल दवाइयों से होती है। महिला के अंडाशय में अण्डों का उत्पादन बढ़ाने के लिए कई तरह की हार्मोनल दवाइयाँ दी जाएंगी । ये दवाइयाँ इंजेक्शन या टेबलेट के माध्यम से दी जाती हैं। अब एक छोटे उपकरण और अल्ट्रासाउंड की मदद से अंडे को बाहर निकाला जाएगा और सबसे स्वस्थ एवं मेच्योर अंडे का चयन किया जाएगा। डॉक्टर लैब में पेट्री डिश में कई स्वस्थ अंडों को स्पर्म के साथ मिलाएंगे और मिश्रण को एक निश्चित तापमान पर रखेंगे। कुछ ही दिनों में अंडे उर्वरित हो जाएंगे और भ्रूण का निर्माण हो जाएगा। तब भ्रूण को महिला की गर्भाशय की परत में रख दिया जाएगा। आईवीएफ की पूरी प्रक्रिया के बाद डॉक्टर महिला की गर्भावस्था की जांच के लिए एक निश्चित अपॉइंटमेंट दे देते हैं।
