Surgical Abortion - Diagnosis and Procedure

Surgical MTP: For a female who is 7 to 12 weeks pregnant, surgical abortion is the only safe way to terminate the pregnancy. Surgical MTP is a totally safe procedure carried out only by experienced gynecologists at Pristyn Care. But make sure you choose a certified and registered clinic and an experienced doctor.

Mini Delivery: For 12 to 20 weeks of pregnancy, abortion procedure known as “Mini Delivery” is performed. One day stay at the hospital is required for this procedure of MTP.

Procedure

To terminate 0-7 of weeks of pregnancy, the gynecologist recommends oral medication. For medical abortion using medicines, a set of pills is given to the female. The pills for medical abortion are called “Abortion Pills”. The pills can be taken orally or by injection. After that, another set of medicines are given to the patient. This pill can be taken orally and can also be directly inserted into the vagina at home or at a clinic.

Gynecologists recommend a gap of 3 to 7 days between the two medicines. During this, antibiotics are prescribed to the patient to prevent any kind of infection. The patient has to undergo an ultrasound to make sure that the abortion has been done successfully. If there are any remnants or dead cells in the fetus, the female has to undergo the surgical procedure once again.

The surgical procedure of abortion is carried out under the influence of general anesthesia. The patient is then asked to lie in a lithotomy position. In lithotomy position, the patient is required to lie down on their back with the legs flexed 90 degrees to the hips. This position allows the surgeon to extract the fetus from the uterus through the birth canal.

The vaginal area is then cleaned with the antiseptic solution i.e Betadine. The gynecologist then inserts a speculum into the vagina to stretch it wide. The doctor then passes a hollow tube i.e. cannula into the uterus. The cannula is attached by a tube to a bottle and a pump that provides a gentle vacuum to remove the fetus from the uterus. A curved instrument called curette is then used to gently pull out the lining of the uterus and remove tissues from the uterus. The uterine tissues are removed during the D&E (Dilation and Evacuation) procedure. After D&E, the surgeon thoroughly examines the uterus to ensure that all the tissues are removed completely and safely. The examination is necessary to prevent the chances of the remnant fetus getting stuck in the uterus and creating complications.

"Please remember it is your legal right to abort. Do not struggle alone or try aborting at home. It is completely unsafe and the third leading cause of maternal deaths in India. In Fact, traditional methods or home remedies most often result in incomplete abortion and cause serious infections and risk to both- your health and eventual pregnancies. This is also why WHO reports that at least 13 women die everyday in India because of unsafe abortions. So please understand the risks and complications of unsafe abortion and approach a good doctor on time. It is both- your medical and legal right.”

  • Physical exam, including a pelvic exam to evaluate your health, how long you have been pregnant, the location as well as the health of the embryo or fetus.
  • An ultrasound to confirm how far along and where the pregnancy is. Your OB-GYN will explain the procedure, possible complications, and when to call your doctor.

  • Effective method 99% of surgical abortions are successful
  • only about 1% of the women need a repeat procedure or other medical intervention for complete abortion.
  • No risk of complications The risk of complications during or after a surgical abortion is almost zero. However, you must ensure that you choose an experienced and skilled ob-gynecologist for this procedure.
  • Daycare procedure A surgical abortion is a daycare procedure where the patient doesn’t need to stay in the hospital. Usually, the doctor discharges the patient just after a few hours of the procedure.
