Our clinics are licensed and our doctors are certified to provide you a safe abortion without any complications. Abortion, in the simplest term, is the medical procedure to end an unwanted pregnancy mid-gestation. It is a legally sanctioned option in India for both married and unmarried adult women (18+ years), and you do not need your parent’s/ partner’s permission for it. However, it is permissible only under 4 conditions:

  • Physical and mental health danger to the mother
  • Chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus
  • Failure of Contraception
  • When the pregnancy is the result of sexual assault such as rape or incest
Aborting a pregnancy is a very personal decision. This is why our doctors advise counseling first. However, if the woman still decides to terminate her pregnancy, our gynecologists are medically trained and legally licensed to perform the abortion procedure.

Abortion Types & Procedure

There are primarily two types of abortion, medical and surgical. Let us understand how both these types of abortion work:

  • Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP): A medical abortion is done using medicines and pills. It is recommended for women within 10 weeks of pregnancy. A medical termination of pregnancy can be done using the following medications or pills:
    1. Oral mifepristone (Mifeprex) and oral misoprostol (Cytotec)
    2. Oral mifepristone and vaginal or sublingual misoprostol
    3. Methotrexate & vaginal misoprostol
  • Surgical abortion: A surgical aboprtion is the procedure that ends a pregnancy by removing the pregnancy tissue (the fetus and placenta) from the uterus. There are two types of surgical abortions, namely Dilation and Evacuation and Dilation and Curettage .
  1. Dilation and Evacuation : This procedure is usually done in the second [2nd] trimester. During this procedure, the Gynecologist removes the fetus and placenta using narrow forceps through the cervix.
  2. Dilation and Curettage : This procedure is usually performed in the first [1st] trimester. During this procedure the surgeon will first dilate your cervix to allow the tissue to be removed from your uterus, either by using a loop-shaped curette instrument or a suction curettage that acts like a small vacuum.

Both of these methods (medicinal and surgical) are equally safe and effective. However, it is important that you make an informed decision before going for the treatment. You can get in touch with Pristyn Care and consult our Gynecologists in Bangalore to learn more about the types of abortion and understand the right line of treatment for you.

15 Years Experience Overall

"Please remember it is your legal right to abort. Do not struggle alone or try aborting at home. It is completely unsafe and the third leading cause of maternal deaths in India. In Fact, traditional methods or home remedies most often result in incomplete abortion and cause serious infections and risk to both- your health and eventual pregnancies. This is also why WHO reports that at least 13 women die everyday in India because of unsafe abortions. So please understand the risks and complications of unsafe abortion and approach a good doctor on time. It is both- your medical and legal right.”

Frequently Asked Question

Is abortion by D&C safe?

Yes! D&C is one of the safest methods of abortion. It ensures complete abortion right during the procedure and records no minor/ major side effects. (However, do ensure, that, it is done by a licensed OBGYN at an MTP registered clinic.)

Can unmarried women get abortions in India?

Yes, Under the Indian MTP act, both- married and unmarried women can get abortions in India.

Can I go home the same day after STP?

Yes, STP is a minor surgery and minimally invasive in nature. It is usually performed on an outpatient basis, and you can go home the same day. However, since passing a pregnancy is moderate- intensely discomforting with heavy cramping and blood flow, we suggest you take good rest at home and indulge in self-care.

Does STP cause a lot of bleeding?

No. Since STP ensures entire fetal expulsion right during the procedure, it marks only slight to moderate bleeding.

What not to do after an abortion?

After an abortion, your vaginal passage is still sensitive and prone to infection until the next 15-20 days. Therefore, doctors suggest you use only sanitary pads instead of tampons to absorb the blood flow and avoid anything penetrative.
Penetrative sex is not recommended until the next 15 days.
Do not lift anything heavy or engage in any high-intensity physical exercise. Swimming too must be avoided for a period of at least two weeks.

Surgical Abortion Procedure

A surgical abortion is typically a D&E or D&C procedure. That is- dilation and evacuation, or dilation and curettage. Either of the procedure may be employed based on the individual need, medical health, or personal choice. Both are quick and painless procedures and can be performed in under 30 minutes.

The OBGYN surgeon first dilates the cervix through medication/ injection. Once the cervix opens up, the OBGYN aborts the pregnancy by gently vacuuming or curetting the fetus and uterine lining out through the woman’s vaginal passage. Since the procedure ensures complete expulsion right through the procedure, it marks comparatively lesser post-surgery bleeding, and recovery is quicker and easier.
