What is abortion?

Abortion is the medical termination of unwanted pregnancy (MTP), and there are two types of abortions: medical abortion and surgical abortion. Medical abortion, also called medical termination of pregnancy (MTP), involves the usage of medicines or a combination of drugs to terminate the pregnancy. Surgical abortion, also known as surgical termination of pregnancy, is a procedure during which the obstetrician-gynecologist uses surgical instruments to remove the pregnancy from the uterus.

Physical examination for Termination of Pregnancy

Before going ahead with the abortion procedure, the OB-GYN recommends certain diagnostic tests such as pelvic ultrasound, blood and urine tests.

Pelvic ultrasound is done to confirm the duration and type of pregnancy (normal pregnancy, molar pregnancy, or ectopic pregnancy.)

However, urine and blood tests are done to detect the possibility of medical conditions such as anemia, diabetes, high or low blood pressure, or sexually transmitted diseases. Based on the findings of the diagnostic tests, the OB-GYN decides the method of abortion and starts the procedure.

In the case of medical abortion, the OB-GYN uses two medicines called Mifepristone and Misoprostol. The first medicine is taken at the clinic in presence of the OB-GYN. After that, the OB-GYN suggests the woman take the second medicine within 48 hours. The second medicine can either be taken at home or clinic. The process of abortion starts within 24 hours after taking the second medicine.

However, in the case of surgical abortion, the OB-GYN uses surgical procedures to remove the embryo from the uterus. During the surgical abortion, the OB-GYN uses a speculum to view inside the vagina and clears the vagina as well as cervix. Then, the doctor applies numbing medication to the cervix, dilates the cervix with specialized medical equipment, inserts a narrow flexible tube into the uterus and gently remove the embryo and pregnancy tissue.

Please remember it is your legal right to abort. Do not struggle alone or try aborting at home. It is completely unsafe and the third leading cause of maternal deaths in India. In Fact, traditional methods or home remedies most often result in incomplete abortion and cause serious infections and risk to both- your health and eventual pregnancies. This is also why WHO reports that at least 13 women die everyday in India because of unsafe abortions. So please understand the risks and complications of unsafe abortion and approach a good doctor on time. It is both- your medical and legal right.

Preparation Before Surgical Abortion

Before a surgical abortion, your OB-GYN evaluates your past health, including the medicines you are taking. Apart from that, the OB-GYN may do the following:-

Physical exam, including a pelvic exam to evaluate your health, how long you have been pregnant, and location as well as the health of the embryo or fetus.

And an ultrasound to confirm how far along and where the pregnancy is. Your OB-GYN will explain the procedure, possible complications, and when to call your doctor.

You should discuss your decision to have an abortion and your feelings about the decision. Also, discuss your plans for future pregnancies and birth control use.

Benefits of choosing Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion becomes the savior when medical abortion fails, miscarriage turns out to be incomplete, or when pregnancy crosses its 9 weeks. However, at our MTP clinics in Gurgaon, our licensed OB-GYN suggests undergoing surgical abortion for a pregnancy that has exceeded 5 weeks. Because it ensures complete abortion, involves minimal bleeding, promotes quicker and safe recovery, and the risk of complications.

Following are the top benefits of choosing surgical abortion to get rid of your unwanted pregnancy:-

  • Surgical abortion is the most effective method with a success rate of 99%.
  • The risk of complications during or after the procedure is almost zero.
  • It’s a daycare procedure that hardly takes around 10-20 minutes to complete.
  • As compared to medical abortion, surgical abortion inflicts minimal bleeding.
  • The recovery after undergoing surgical abortion is quick and comfortable.

Just after 2 days of undergoing a surgical abortion, you can return to your daily routine quickly and smoothly. However, for the first week, you should avoid doing strenuous physical activities.
