    What is ectopic pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants outside of the endometrial cavity. The most common site for ectopic pregnancy is the ampullary region of the fallopian tube. Ectopic pregnancy is an emergency condition and requires immediate treatment. If left untreated, it can lead to extensive internal bleeding, nausea, acute pain, infection and sometimes even death. Ectopic pregnancy is one of the leading causes of first-trimester mortality and is responsible for approximately 4% of all pregnancy-related mortalities.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Ectopic Pregnancy

    Diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy Gurgaon

During diagnosis, the doctor asks about the patient’s medical history and suggests a few diagnostic tests. The clinical diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy is usually done by measuring the level of serums and hormones (human chorionic gonadotropin). Common diagnostic tests for ectopic pregnancy are-

    • Pelvic exam – This test is usually performed to identify the areas of pain or the presence of a mass in the fallopian tube or ovary.
    • Transvaginal ultrasound – The doctor usually recommends this test to identify the exact location of the pregnancy. During this test, a wand-like device is inserted through the vagina. This device uses sound waves to create images of the uterus, fallopian tube, and ovaries.
    • Human chorionic gonadotropin test – Doctors recommend this test to check the level of hCG. During pregnancy, the level of hCG becomes high. The test is useful in determining the best treatment for ectopic pregnancy.

    Ectopic pregnancy treatment in Gurgaon

The treatment procedure for ectopic pregnancy usually depends on the severity of the condition. The main treatment options for ectopic pregnancy are medication or surgery.

Medication treatment – If an ectopic pregnancy is detected in an earlier stage, then treatment with medication is usually recommended. In medication treatment, doctors suggest methotrexate.  This medicine is given directly by injection in a single dose. The doctor monitors the level of hCG before and after the procedure. If the first dose fails to decrease the level of hCG, then a second dose may be needed. Confirmation of termination of ectopic pregnancy is done by performing an ultrasound.

Surgical treatment – Surgical treatment for ectopic pregnancy usually depends on the type of ectopic pregnancy. Salpingectomy and salpingostomy are two types of laparoscopic surgeries that are performed to treat ectopic pregnancies.

    • Salpingectomy – In this surgical procedure, one or both fallopian tubes are removed. Doctors make a small incision in your abdomen and insert a laparoscope and other surgical tools to remove the fallopian tube. Salpingectomy helps in reducing the risk of cancer of the fallopian tube, peritoneum and ovary
    • Salpingostomy – This is performed to repair a damaged tube or to remove an ectopic pregnancy. During this procedure, the doctor makes an incision and inserts a laparoscope to visualize the fallopian tube, if the fallopian tube ruptures due to ectopic pregnancy, then a salpingostomy is performed to remove the ruptured fallopian tube. If the fallopian tube is not ruptured, then the vasopressin drug is injected into the tube to minimize the bleeding.

But in severe cases, surgical treatment is required.

What are the risks and complications of ectopic pregnancy surgery?

Ectopic pregnancy surgery is usually a safe and successful procedure. However, like any surgical procedure, ectopic pregnancy surgery carries certain risks and complications.

    • Excessive bleeding
    • Damage to fallopian tubes

Does insurance cover the cost of ectopic pregnancy surgery?

Yes, insurance covers the cost of ectopic pregnancy surgery as it falls under the category of the medically necessary list of treatments. Contact your insurance provider to understand the policy before treatment.

How long should I rest after ectopic pregnancy surgery?

The recovery period depends on the type of surgery you had. The recovery period for laparoscopic surgery is around 1 week. You can expect abdominal soreness and swelling during the recovery.

When does ectopic pregnancy start causing pain?

Symptoms of ectopic pregnancy tend to develop between the 4th and 12th weeks of pregnancy. As ectopic pregnancy progresses, it starts causing severe abdominal pain, usually on one side. You may also experience shoulder pain if blood leaks from the fallopian tube.
