About URSL

Ureteroscopic lithotripsy or URSL is a modern procedure to treat kidney stones that are immune to medications and other non-surgical methods. URSL provides a high stone passage rate with minimal complications. Ureteroscopy uses precision laser treatment for kidney stone removal stuck in the ureteral passage. The procedure is also effective for small to medium-sized stones ( 7-10mm), offering fast relief from pain and urinary retention. Get in touch with us to know more about URSL surgery in Gurgaon.

Diagnostic Tests

Several diagnostic tests done before the URSL treatment include the following –

  • Imaging tests (Xrays, abdominal ultrasound, MRI)
  • Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test
  • Blood test
  • Urinalysis

Procedure

The procedure begins after the patient is given spinal or general anesthesia. The surgeon inserts a thin, long fiber-optic scope called a ureteroscope into the ureteral passage through the urethra. Simultaneously, x-rays guide the surgeon inside the kidneys and ureters where the stones are located. Once the stone is located, it is pulled out with a stone basket. If the size of the stone is large, then the surgeon uses a precision laser to break it into smaller fragments. The stone fragments are then flushed out through urine.

The surgeon usually inserts ureteral stents to help flush out the stones from the body. The stent expands the passage of the ureter, which makes it easier for the stone fragments to travel through the ureter and out of the body.

How to prepare for the URSL procedure?

Your doctor generally provides instructions before the URSL procedure to help your prepare for the surgery. Here is how you can prepare for your URSL surgery –

  • Inform your urologist about any ongoing medicines or health conditions before the URSL surgery.
  • Do not consume aspirin or blood thinners before the surgery. If you have to take any medications, discuss them with your doctor.
  • Carry your diagnostic tests reports with you on the day of surgery.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes to avoid discomfort around the surgical site.
  • Stop smoking tobacco or anything else before the surgery.
  • Inform your doctor about any allergies related to anesthesia.
  • Do not eat or drink 8 to 9 hours prior to the surgery, as it can delay the effects of anesthesia.

What to expect after URSL?

Here is what you can expect after the URSL surgery –

  • You will be under the effect of anesthesia which means you will be dizzy after the surgery. After the surgery, you will be moved to an observational room to monitor your progress.
  • You may experience blood in the urine, which can last for several days to several weeks.
  • There may be mild pain due to the insertion of ureteral stents. Your doctor may prescribe you some medications after the surgery to reduce pain and discomfort due to stents.
  • You may be discharged the following day if the doctor does not suspect any complications.
  • The urologist will prescribe medications such as antibiotics and pain relievers for stent pain to ease the process of recovery.

Recovery after URSL

While ureteroscopic lithotripsy is a safe procedure, it may take a week before you can return to your normal activities. Your hospital or kidney stone specialist will provide you with a set of instructions that will help you during your recovery process. Some of the post-surgery recovery instructions include –

  • Drink plenty of fluids to help flush out the blood and stone fragments from the body.
  • You may have a mild burning sensation with urination that usually lasts several days following the surgery. The doctor may prescribe Tylenol to help ease the pain.
  • You will be given pain relievers for severe pain as the stones are expelled from the body.
  • Encourage a healthy diet rich in fiber and reduce the consumption of oxalate-rich foods, salt, and animal proteins to prevent the recurrence of kidney stones.
  • Visit the doctor for your follow-up appointment and keep them informed of your recovery process.

Benefits of URSL surgery

URSL being an advanced procedure, offers several benefits over conventional surgeries due to the nature of tiny cuts and incisions. Moreover, when the size of the stone is greater than 20mm, the success rate of URSL is higher than any other surgical procedure with minimal complications. Some of the benefits of Ureteroscopic lithotripsy include the following –

  • No cuts and scars
  • No bleeding during the surgery
  • Faster recovery
  • Minimal complications
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Outpatient procedure
  • Resume daily activities within a week
