Diagnostic Tests Before RIRS Surgery

Before recommending Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS), the urologist performs a comprehensive evaluation to determine the size, location, and severity of the kidney stones. These diagnostic tests help assess the patient’s overall health and assist in planning the most effective treatment approach.

• Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) Test – This test helps assess kidney function by measuring the amount of urea nitrogen in the blood.

• Urinalysis – A urine test helps identify urinary tract infections, blood in the urine, or other abnormalities associated with kidney stones.

RIRS Procedure

Once the diagnosis is complete and the patient is considered suitable for treatment, the surgery is scheduled. RIRS is a minimally invasive procedure performed without any external cuts or incisions, making it one of the most advanced treatment options for kidney stones.

• Anesthesia Administration – Before the procedure begins, the patient is given either spinal anesthesia or general anesthesia to ensure comfort throughout the surgery.
• Insertion of Ureteroscope – The surgeon inserts a thin, flexible ureteroscope through the natural urinary passage, passing through the urethra and bladder to reach the ureter and kidney.
• Stone Localization – Advanced imaging guidance and endoscopic visualization help the surgeon precisely locate the kidney stones and assess their size and position.
• Laser Stone Fragmentation – A high-precision holmium laser is used to break the stones into smaller fragments. The laser targets the stones accurately while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues.
• Stone Removal – The fragmented stones are either removed using specialized retrieval devices or allowed to pass naturally through the urinary tract.
• Placement of Double J (DJ) Stent – In many cases, a temporary DJ stent is placed between the kidney and bladder to maintain urine flow, reduce swelling, and facilitate the passage of any remaining stone fragments.
• Recovery and Follow-Up – The stent is usually removed after a few days or weeks, depending on the patient’s condition. Follow-up evaluations are performed to ensure complete stone clearance and proper recovery.
