Pilonidal Sinus is a painful condition in which cyst is formed near the tailbone or at the upper end of the butt between the two butt cheeks.Sinus, in general, is inflamed and abnormal tract or cavity present in any organ or tissue. And, in the case of Pilonidal Sinus, Sinus leads to the formation of pus-filled lump which is known as Pilonidal Cyst.
The condition is exceedingly painful and often occurs in people who sit for a long period or in people who are engaged in activities that require a lot of sitting and pressure on the buttocks like horse riding, bike riding, cycling, etc.
Backward growth of hair into the skin.
Exercises that stress and irritate the hair follicle near the buttock region.
Excessive sweating around the tailbone region
Sometimes, the cyst could be congenital or present at birth.
Pain while standing and sitting
Pus and blood oozing out from the cyst
Systemic infection throughout the body
Rare chances of skin cancer within the cyst
The diagnosis of Pilonidal sinus require a physical exam & doctor may ask few questions about the symptoms, what supplements or medications you take and from how long you had this problem.
The treatment of Pilonidal Sinus depends on the nature and the type of cyst. You can easily find the best clinics, treatments, centres, and doctors in Hyderabad.
At the early stage, preventive treatment can be done which mainly includes a healthy and hygienic lifestyle. You should not ignore any early symptoms. If you even notice a single symptom, visit a doctor as early as possible and get yourself examined.
If you feel slight pain and irritation in the Sinus, doctors will prescribe you a broad spectrum antibiotic which is used to stop and prevent bacterial infections in the Sinus. However, this treatment may not heal the sinus, but it will give you relief from the discomfort caused by the infection.
This procedure is applied when Pilonidal Sinus/Cysts get filled with mucus or pus. First of all, a local anesthetic will be given to you, then the doctor will open the cyst and will clean away hair, blood and pus present in the cyst. The doctor will pack the wound with a sterile dressing to get it healed. The wound usually heals in the time span of 4–10 weeks.
In this treatment, the doctor will first give you a local anesthetic. Followed by injection of chemical compounds containing phenol which is used as an antiseptic. This procedure will have to be done several times or until the cyst gets hard and closed. However, Phenol injection treatment has a very high recurrence rate.
Laser surgery is regarded as the most effective treatment for Pilonidal Sinus. In this least invasive treatment, a particular laser fiber is used to send high-intensity light energy into the Sinus which destroys the wound and collapses the infected tract. Before this, the patient is provided with local anesthesia to remove the pit and hair strands in the cyst. This is done through a small incision. In many cases, no incision is performed at all; the laser treatment alone is used to heal the cyst. Laser surgery treatment can also be carried out if there is more than one cyst or Sinus tract.
