What is Fistula?

The term anal fistula is defined as a small canal that can originate between the end of the bowel and the skin around the anus. It is very common among the patients who had faced earlier anal pus infection. An anal infection (boil filled with pus) is an infected cavity which is completely filled with the pus. It is formed when anal pus infection or abscess starts to drain and becomes more problematic. It may also cause bleeding or discharge while passing the stools which may be more and more painful. If the anal fistula becomes severe in any situation, drainage may continue for a long duration of time.

Types of Anal Fistula:

There are four types of Anal Fistula which are described as follows:

  • Intersphincteric Fistula: When the opening or the tract originates between the internal & external muscles of the sphincter and opens very close to the opening of the anus.
  • Transphincteric Fistula: When the tract opening originates in the space between the internal and external muscles of sphincter or in the space behind the anal area. It crosses the external sphincter and opens outside the opening of the anus.
  • Suprasphincteric Fistula: When the tract starts in the gap between the internal and external muscles of the sphincter and turns in the upward direction to puborectal muscle and then extended in a downward direction between the levator ani and puborectalis muscle.
  • Extrasphincteric Fistula: When the tract started at the rectum and extended in the downward direction through the levator ani muscle and opens around the anal area.

To better define the Fistula Doctor may order an MRI or Ultrasound as well.

Procedure

For fistula treatment there are numerous best physicians available in Hyderabad.

Techniques of treatment are basically divided into two categories:

  • Laser Surgery for Anal Fistula
  • Traditional Surgical Method for Anal Fistula

Laser Surgery of Anal Fistula: In this type of technique, laser energy radial emits the user probe which is inserted into the fistulous tract and this light directly destroys the fistula epithelium and also destroys the rest of the channel/ tract of fistula. Laser techniques are favorable over the open methods of Anal Fistula treatments due to the various reasons, which are mentioned below.Patient can start normal activities within 24 hours

  • Quick relief and fast recovery
  • Quick and painless treatment
  • There is no need for repeated Doctor Visits
  • There is no requirement of daily dressings
  • This can be done in all the age groups with a minimal involved risk

A patient can undergo laser surgery or laparoscopic treatment in order to find symptomatic relief from fistula. Laser surgery for fistula in Hyderabad is very easy to achieve and is considered to be one of the modern treatments.

Traditional Methods: This method is based upon the cuts and suturing which can be really painful and also may take time to heal the problem. These methods generally include the surgical procedures which are highly painful and possess chances for recurrence of the disease.
