Gynecologists suggest a few diagnostic tests before myomectomy surgery. These tests help find possible conditions that might complicate the surgery if not found and treated in time. These tests also help assess the severity of the condition. Some common tests done before myomectomy include –

• Blood test:  During myomectomy, there is a risk of blood loss. Therefore,  the doctors recommend a blood test to check the leukocyte and erythrocyte count. It also helps in examining a patient’s overall health, looking for signs of infection, or seeing how certain organs are performing.
• Pelvic ultrasound: The doctor recommends this test to check the abnormalities in the anatomic structure of the uterus, including endometrial conditions. This test produces images that are used to assess female pelvic organs, including the uterus, cervix, vagina and fallopian tubes. It is a safe and reliable way to look for uterine fibroids (benign growth).
• Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI):  MRI is a better imaging test to determine if uterine fibroids are present are not. It helps in identifying the exact anatomical location of uterine fibroids.

• Abdominal myomectomy:  Abdominal myomectomy is a traditional surgical procedure for treating uterine fibroids. It is also known as an open myomectomy. In this surgical procedure, the  surgeon makes an incision in the lower abdomen, which is also known as a ‘bikini cut’. The open cut in the abdomen helps in accessing the uterus and removing the fibroids. After removing the  fibroids, the surgeon stitches the abdominal wall and skin. Abdominal myomectomy is performed under general anesthesia.
• Laparoscopic myomectomy:  In laparoscopic myomectomy, the surgeon makes a small incision near the belly button and inserts a laparoscope into the abdomen through the incision to remove uterine fibroids. A laparoscope is a thin narrow tube-like medical device with a camera on its one end.
• Hysteroscopic myomectomy: This surgical procedure is performed to remove  submucous fibroids- rare uterine fibroids that bulge into the uterine cavity. In this procedure, fibroids are removed with the help of a special  medical instrument called ‘hysteroscopic resectoscope’. The surgeon passes this device into the uterine cavity through the vagina and cervical canal to remove the fibroids.
• Robotic myomectomy: This is a minimally invasive surgery for the removal of fibroids. It uses a combination of high-definition 3D magnification robotic technology and miniature instruments for enhanced precision in fibroids removal. In this procedure, a tiny incision is made in the abdomen for the slender robotic arms and tiny surgical tools. There are four arms, which are all wristed- one arm is equipped with a high-definition 3-D magnification camera, the other two arms act as the surgeon’s arms, and one optional arm is used for holding back tissue. These effortless movements, along with the wristed capabilities of the robotic arms, are the most significant advantages of robotic surgery over traditional surgeries.
