Achalasia Cardia is the failure of (LES) lower esophageal sphincter to relax and let the food pass down to the stomach which leads to difficulty in swallowing food. It makes hard to pass the food and liquid into the stomach.
Treatment
The doctor will ask about the medical and surgical history of the patient as well as any active medications that the patient may be taking. In addition, he can ask for certain tests. They are listed below:
Esophagomyotomy surgery is suggested to treat the condition. It involves cutting the esophageal sphincter muscle as it is highly effective and the success rate is also high. Rarely patients may need other treatments such as Heller Myotomy which is a part of laparoscopic surgery. It is performed under anesthesia and making a tiny incision. The incision is done to pass the surgical instruments. In Heller Myotomy, a scope is connected to a video camera that sends magnified images to monitor allowing the surgeon to view the anatomy and to manipulate the instruments. The advantages of Heller Myotomy include minimal postoperative pain, faster recovery from surgery and early return to work and normal activities. Patients may have complaints of developing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) after a Heller myotomy. So Nissen fundoplication is performed with Heller Myotomy to avoid the condition of GERD. This is also performed laparoscopically wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the lower esophageal sphincter to strengthen it.
