Treatment

Diagnosis

The doctor will ask about the medical and surgical history of the patient as well as any active medications that the patient may be taking. In addition, he can ask for certain tests. They are listed below:

  • Barium Swallow: This X-ray is done to review the esophagus and stomach.
  • Esophagoscopy: The procedure is done to check esophageal cancer as it is also one of the most critical causes obstructing the food passing through the abdominal procedure.
  • Esophageal Manometry: Achalasia can be diagnosed at an early stage through this Manometry.

Procedure

Esophagomyotomy surgery is suggested to treat the condition. It involves cutting the esophageal sphincter muscle as it is highly effective and the success rate is also high. Rarely patients may need other treatments such as Heller Myotomy which is a part of laparoscopic surgery. It is performed under anesthesia and making a tiny incision. The incision is done to pass the surgical instruments. In Heller Myotomy, a scope is connected to a video camera that sends magnified images to monitor allowing the surgeon to view the anatomy and to manipulate the instruments. The advantages of Heller Myotomy include minimal postoperative pain, faster recovery from surgery and early return to work and normal activities. Patients may have complaints of developing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) after a Heller myotomy. So Nissen fundoplication is performed with Heller Myotomy to avoid the condition of GERD. This is also performed laparoscopically wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the lower esophageal sphincter to strengthen it.
