What is Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that are connected to optic nerve damage. The optic nerve is directly responsible for the vision, and its degeneration impacts the overall vision negatively. It is the leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 60. Though aging is a common risk factor behind glaucoma, it is not the only one. Nerve damage due to glaucoma occurs primarily due to the accumulation of fluids and increased eye pressure. If diagnosed in time, the eye pressure can be reduced and the patient’s impending blindness can be prevented or slowed down.

Why is Glaucoma Treatment Required?

Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that requires prompt and effective treatment to prevent vision loss. Here are the key reasons why glaucoma treatment is essential:

  1. Prevents Vision Loss: Glaucoma can lead to irreversible vision loss. Early treatment helps prevent this severe outcome by managing eye pressure.
  2. Controls Eye Pressure: Effective glaucoma treatment reduces the pressure in the eye, preventing damage to the optic nerve, which is vital for good vision.
  3. Reduces Risk of Total Blindness: Without treatment, glaucoma may progress to total blindness. Regular treatment significantly reduces this risk.
  4. Improves Quality of Life: By maintaining vision and eye health, treatment allows individuals to continue engaging in daily activities and preserves their independence.
  5. Monitors Progress: Treatment involves regular check-ups, helping to monitor the disease’s progression and adjust treatment as necessary.

Starting treatment early and sticking to the prescribed regimen is key to managing glaucoma effectively and maintaining a high quality of life.

Advanced Glaucoma Treatment Options in Mumbai

At Pristyn Care, we offer a range of advanced treatment options for glaucoma in Mumbai. Our experienced team of ophthalmologists specialises in providing personalised care as per each patient’s unique needs.  Below, we will discuss the different effective treatments available at our premium facilities.

Trabeculectomy

Trabeculectomy is a surgical procedure that remains the gold standard for glaucoma treatment in India. During this procedure, our skilled eye surgeons create a small flap in the sclera (the white part of the eye) and a new pathway for fluid drainage. This helps to effectively lower the intraocular pressure (IOP) and prevent further damage to the optic nerve.

The flap is then carefully replaced to protect the drainage pathway, and the site is covered with the conjunctiva.

Trabeculectomy is highly recommended for patients with advanced glaucoma, particularly those who have not responded well to medications or other treatments. It is effective for both open-angle and closed-angle glaucoma.

Other Treatment Options

Pristyn Care provides several treatments for glaucoma alongside trabeculectomy:

  1. Medications: Our ophthalmologists may start with medications to lower eye pressure and protect the optic nerve. These can be eye drops, pills, or both, depending on what works best for the patient.
  2. Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT): This gentle laser treatment helps fluid drain better in the eye, which lowers pressure. It’s often used if medications don’t work or as a first step to avoid surgery.
  3. Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS): For early to moderate cases, we might use tiny stents to improve drainage and lower eye pressure. This method is less invasive than traditional surgery.
  4. Drainage Implant Surgery: If other treatments don’t help, we might suggest a small device, like the Ahmed Glaucoma Valve or the Aurolab Aqueous Drainage Implant. These help drain excess fluid and reduce eye pressure.
  5. Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI) and Cyclophotocoagulation: These laser treatments are chosen based on the specific type of glaucoma. They either improve drainage or decrease fluid production in the eye.

Our experienced ophthalmologists will determine the most suitable treatment based on the patient’s specific needs.

Diagnosis and Consultation for Glaucoma

Diagnosing glaucoma requires a comprehensive eye examination and several specialised tests to detect the condition early and prevent further vision loss.

The diagnostic process for glaucoma typically involves a combination of tests, including

  • Tonometry to measure intraocular pressure
  • Visual field tests to examine peripheral vision
  • Gonioscopy to assess the drainage angle of the eye
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) to obtain detailed images of the retina and optic nerve
  • Pachymetry to measure corneal thickness
  • Dilated eye exam to thoroughly examine the optic nerve and retina.

These tests help detect the early signs of glaucoma and determine the type and severity of the condition.

By consulting with experts at Pristyn Care for glaucoma treatment in Mumbai, you can benefit from their extensive experience, advanced diagnostic equipment, and personalised approach to care.

Our team of highly skilled ophthalmologists is dedicated to providing accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans to help preserve your vision and maintain your quality of life.

FAQs on Glaucoma Treatment In Mumbai

What are the common treatment options for glaucoma in Mumbai?

In Mumbai, glaucoma treatment options include medications (eye drops or pills), laser treatments such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) and Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI), and surgical options like traditional filtration surgeries and minimally invasive procedures such as micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). The choice of treatment depends on the type and severity of glaucoma.

How is glaucoma diagnosed in Mumbai?

Glaucoma diagnosis in Mumbai involves a comprehensive eye examination, including measuring intraocular pressure (IOP), assessing the optic nerve, and testing the visual field. Advanced imaging technologies such as ultrasound pachymetry, ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), and Octopus Automated Perimeter for visual field testing aid in the early detection and monitoring of glaucoma.

What precautions should be taken after glaucoma treatment?

After glaucoma treatment, patients should adhere to postoperative care instructions, attend follow-up appointments, and continue any prescribed medications. It is essential to protect the eyes from injury, avoid strenuous activities, and maintain good hygiene to minimise the risk of infection and ensure the long-term success of the treatment.

What is the success rate of glaucoma treatment in Mumbai?

The glaucoma treatment success rate in Mumbai depends on the type of glaucoma, the stage of the disease, and the chosen treatment method. With early detection and appropriate treatment, the success rate of controlling glaucoma and preserving vision is high. However, regular monitoring and adjustments to treatment plans are necessary to maintain optimal eye health.

What are the common symptoms of glaucoma?

Common glaucoma symptoms include gradual loss of peripheral vision, blurred vision, eye pain, headaches, halos around lights, and redness in the eye. However, in some cases, glaucoma may not present any noticeable symptoms until the disease has progressed significantly, emphasising the importance of regular eye check-ups for early detection.

Is glaucoma 100% curable?

No, glaucoma is not 100% curable. Managing the condition effectively involves regular monitoring and treatment to prevent vision loss. Early detection and consistent treatment are critical for maintaining eye health.

What is the cost of glaucoma treatment in Mumbai?

In Mumbai, the cost of glaucoma treatment varies widely. Trabeculectomy, the gold standard for severe cases, can range from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1,20,000. Other treatments like medications, laser therapies, and minimally invasive surgeries also vary, typically costing between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 80,000.

What is the most effective treatment for glaucoma?

The most effective treatment for glaucoma typically includes medications like eye drops or pills, laser treatments, or surgical options, depending on the severity and progression of the condition. Regular check-ups are crucial to adjust treatments as needed, forming a part of essential glaucoma precaution strategies.

Can eye drops cure glaucoma?

Eye drops cannot cure glaucoma but are effective in managing the condition by reducing eye pressure, which can slow disease progression. Continuous use as prescribed is essential for maintaining their effectiveness and contributes positively to the overall glaucoma treatment success rate.

Can you live 50 years with glaucoma?

Yes, individuals diagnosed with glaucoma can live with the condition for 50 years or longer, especially with early detection and ongoing treatment. Adhering to prescribed treatments and glaucoma precaution measures significantly helps manage the condition and maintain quality of life.

Is glaucoma painful?

Glaucoma is not usually painful. The most common form, open-angle glaucoma, progresses slowly without pain. However, angle-closure glaucoma, a less common type, can cause sudden severe eye pain and requires immediate medical attention, underscoring the importance of regular glaucoma precaution and monitoring.

Glaucoma surgery recovery tips

  • Wear protective eyewear if you experience mild redness, swelling, and irritation around the eye, and avoid rubbing it.
  • Follow the post-surgery prescription and be consistent with using eyedrops and medicines
  • Contact your eye surgeon immediately if you experience any complications such as unbearable pain, pus, or discharge from the eye, a shadow in the visual field, a decrease in vision, etc.
  • Avoid bending, running, and lifting activities for a couple of weeks after the surgery
  • Avoid wearing reusable contact lenses or consult a doctor before using them
  • Adhere to the precautions for swimming, diving, and other similar activities suggested by your doctor

How do you prevent glaucoma?

Early detection and timely management can help delay vision loss and prevent further development.

  • Get your eyes checked regularly. Increased pressure in your eyes can cause glaucoma. Therefore, a regular eye examination can help diagnose the condition at an early stage and prevent further worsening.
  • Immediate doctor consultation. If your eye pressure is greater than usual, contact a doctor about your options for managing ocular hypertension. Adhere to their guidance religiously.
  • Maintain BP and blood sugar levels. It is important to keep blood pressure and blood sugar levels within normal ranges. Also, using eyewear, including safety glasses and goggles, will help in preventing injuries, too.

Complications of glaucoma

  • Complete loss of vision
  • Retinal detachment
  • Coroidal detachment
  • Chronic hypotony
  • Anterior segment necrosis

Types of glaucoma

  • Primary glaucoma with an open angle. Open-angle refers to an open-wide drainage angle where your iris’s outer edge and your eye’s white, or sclera, meet. In order to exit the anterior chamber, aqueous humor flows into the drainage angle.  It is the most prevalent kind of glaucoma.
  • Angle-closure primary glaucoma. From the posterior chamber behind your iris, aqueous humor fluid is expected to move past your pupil and into the anterior chamber. However, sometimes your eye’s lens presses forward too much, obstructing fluid flow through the pupil opening.  As a result, the drainage angle of the iris is being forced forward by the excess fluid in the posterior chamber, and narrows or closes.
  • Secondary glaucoma. This is when glaucoma develops as a result of an incident or condition that raises eye pressure. It can result from a number of conditions, such as eye trauma, pigmentary dispersion syndrome, uveitis, some drugs (particularly cycloplegics and corticosteroids), eye surgeries, and more.
  • Congenital eye disease. It is caused by alterations or discrepancies that occurred during fetal development.  These include Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome, Marfan syndrome, neurofibromatosis type 1, congenital rubella syndrome, and aniridia.
