What is Fistula?

An anal fistula is a small channel that can develop between the end of the bowel and the skin near the anus. It is common among those who had the earlier anal abscess. An anal abscess is an infected cavity which is filled with pus . It is formed when anal abscess drained and not healed properly. It may cause bleeding or discharge while passing stools which may be more painful. If the anal fistula becomes severe, drainage may persist for a long time.

In other cases, where the outside of the channel opening closes, the result may be recurrent anal abscesses. The only cure for an anal fistula is surgery.

Most Common Types of Anal Fistula:-

In general, 4 types of Anal Fistula are found which are as follows:-

  • Intersphincteric Fistula: is called when the channel or tract starts between the internal & External sphincter muscles and opens very close to anal opening.
  • Transphincteric Fistula: is called when channel/tract starts in the space between the internal and external sphincter muscles or in the space behind the anus.It crosses the external sphincter and opens outside the anal opening.
  • Suprasphincteric Fistula: is called when channel/tract starts in the gap between internal and external sphincter muscles and turns upward to puborectal muscle and then extends downward between the puborectal and levator ani muscle.
  • Extrasphincteric Fistula: is called when channel/tract starts at the rectum and extends downward through levator ani muscle and opens around the anus.
