What is a Revision Bariatric Surgery?

Revisional bariatric surgery is the general term for follow-up surgical treatments carried out on patients who have had any kind of bariatric (weight-loss) surgery in the past. It is also referred to as Redo Bariatric Surgery. Alteration, reversal, and modification or correction are the three types of revisional bariatric surgery. If there were unintended adverse effects from the initial operation, the follow-up procedure might enhance both the patient's quality of life and the efficacy of the initial therapy. Approximately 7-15% of bariatric surgery patients undergo revisional procedures. In order to decide whether a revisional bariatric procedure is necessary, the doctor will evaluate a patient's general health, weight reduction progress, and any quality-of-life problems that have emerged since the initial procedure.

Who Should Undergo a Revision Bariatric Surgery?

The purpose of a revision bariatric surgery is to either reverse the previous surgery or increase the effectiveness of the patient’s initial weight-loss procedure while minimizing undesirable side effects.

  • Not Losing Enough Weight. Sometimes, a patient may not lose the anticipated amount of excess body weight within the allotted time frame following surgery, such as 18 months or two years. Research indicates that individuals who lose less than 15% of their total body weight may be candidates for revisional bariatric surgery, even though there are no formal weight-loss parameters defining the treatment impact of a first bariatric procedure.
  • Complications. Gastric fistula, which occurs when the small stomach pouch forms an undesired attachment to a section of the bypassed stomach, is another uncommon consequence of gastric bypass surgery. Sometimes, weight-loss surgeries may lead to the development of a hiatal hernia, which can cause heartburn and discomfort. After a gastric band surgery, the patient may experience band slipping around the stomach or the band eroding into the inner lining of the stomach.
  • Side-effects. After undergoing bariatric surgery, some people have adverse symptoms, such as acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), difficulties with swallowing, etc.
  • Gaining weight. A few patients gain weight back. A patient who has a first sleeve gastrectomy, for instance, can start gaining weight and experiencing symptoms of GERD.
  • Undernourishment. Sometimes an initial bariatric treatment restricts the absorption of too many nutrients from the diet, resulting in vitamin deficiencies, hypocalcemia, or malnutrition. During revisional surgery, the original bariatric operation may be slightly altered. Rarely, the entire process is undone, particularly if the patient suffers from both malnourishment and liver failure.
