A parotidectomy surgery is a surgical procedure to remove the parotid gland, which is located in front of the ears. This gland produces saliva, an important element for digestion. During the procedure, certain types of cancer or benign tumors of the parotid gland can be removed, and the tissue around those glands can also be repaired.
Parotidectomy is typically done using incision and dissection, where a cut is made along the side of the head, neck, and face to access the gland. The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia and can take between 1-3 hours, depending on the size and location of the tumor and/or other structures that need to be removed. Afterwards, the incision is closed with sutures and patients may have a temporary drainage tube placed in the wound. Recovery time varies, but in most cases, people can typically return to their normal activities in 7-10 days.

A surgeon makes an incision in front of or behind the ear to reach the parotid gland. The surgeon carefully dissects the gland from surrounding structures, such as the facial nerve, which controls facial muscle movements, to minimize the risk of nerve damage. The surgeon removes the portion of the gland that requires removal, which can be either a portion of the gland or the entire gland, depending on the specific condition. The incision is closed with sutures or surgical staples, and a dressing is applied to the area.
