About Dandruff

Dandruff is a common skin condition that causes white or yellow colored flakes on your scalp. Sometimes it may be itchy and spread to your hairline, eyebrows, and behind the ears. Although dandruff flakes are not contagious, they can be difficult to handle and may cause embarrassment. Mild dandruff is treatable through gentle daily shampooing and natural remedies, but a severe form requires proper treatment. Dandruff can affect people of all age groups, but it is more common in the teenage years to midlife. Several factors, such as a person’s age, stress levels, weather, medical conditions, and the frequency of using hair products, contribute to the development of dandruff. Sometimes dandruff is also considered a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition causing itchy patches and greasy scales on those skin regions where you have a lot of sebaceous/oil glands, including the scalp.

Types of Dandruff

There are 5 major types of dandruff explained below:

Fungal Dandruff:

Fungal malassezia, a natural component found on skin and scalp, survives on excessive oil. It leads to the build-up of skin cells, which fall as white flakes. You may try medicated anti-dandruff shampoos with the ingredients pyrithione zinc and ketoconazole, which will help kill this yeast.

Dandruff Caused by Oily Hair:

This type of dandruff is caused by too much sebum oil on the scalp and an overgrowth of malassezia yeast. The excess oil can cause the formation of dead skin cells and dirt in the form of itchy flakes. The major reasons behind the sebum oil secretion are stress and anxiety. Increasing the shampooing frequency can reduce the amount of oil on your scalp and slow down the yeast development.

Childhood Dandruff:

Seborrheic dermatitis affects about 42% of infants on their face and in the diaper area. When it gets to their scalp, it’s called cradle cap. Commonly, it looks like red-yellow plaques with thick, greasy scales and tends to develop in their first three months of life. Usually, children don’t get dandruff until puberty, when the oil glands in their skin begin producing more oil.

Beard Dandruff:

Facial hair usually grows in the same areas where seborrheic dermatitis flares up, such as around your mouth, under the nose, and sideburns. Shampooing your facial hair with the same shampoo you use for your head hair can help avoid beard dandruff. In most cases, you can treat it without shaving off your mustache or beard. However, if you frequently experience beard dandruff, you might have to use an over-the-counter anti-dandruff shampoo to clean the region.

Dry Dandruff:

Excessive loss of moisture or oil on your skin leads to the development of flakes and itching on the scalp. Ageing skin, dry weather, and reactions to certain hair care products can cause dryness in the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can dandruff cause hairfall?

The itching and inflammation caused by the dandruff may lead to hair damage and breakage over time. Although dandruff doesn’t directly cause hair fall, it weakens hair follicles and causes physical trauma from scratching.

How do I stop getting dandruff?

Keeping the scalp clean, through regularly washing your hair, and using an anti-dandruff shampoo containing ingredients such as ketoconazole or salicylic acid, managing stress levels, and using a proper anti-dandruff treatment helps in reducing and managing the dandruff.

How can I permanently get rid of dandruff?

Although there is no permanent treatment for dandruff, the symptoms can be effectively managed through managing stress levels, taking care of your hair and scalp, using fewer styling products, keeping the scalp clean, and using an anti-dandruff shampoo containing ingredients such as ketoconazole or salicylic acid.

Is dandruff contagious?

No. Dandruff is not caused by bacteria or viruses and can not be passed from person to person. Consult the best dermatologist in your Delhi for the most effective dandruff treatment.

How Does Dandruff Form?

Several studies have suggested that the overgrowth of Malassezia, a type of yeast, is one of the primary causes of dandruff development. Malassezia feeds on the oil produced by the skin and lives naturally on the skin. Also, when the skin is irritated, it produces more oil and skin cells to help soothe the irritation.

Sensitivity to the ingredients in your hair care products is one of the primary causes behind skin irritation. Harsh weather can also make the skin dry. Other skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, may make your skin more irritated. Excess oil on the skin means more food for the yeast, allowing it to overgrow. Usually, the extra skin cells die and fall off, but they get mixed with the extra oil and yeast on your head, which sets off a cycle that leads to the dandruff development.

What Causes Dandruff?

  • Irregular shampooing. An inconsistent hair wash routine may lead to the development of plaque or oil buildup on the scalp, which may lead to the development of dandruff.
  • Sensitive skin. Certain ingredients in the hair care products or hair dyes may not suit your skin and irritate the scalp, triggering dandruff.
  • Seborrheic dermatitis. A severe form of seborrheic dermatitis can lead to intense itching and cause symptoms such as redness, greasy skin, and scaly patches on the skin.
  • Malassezia. People struggling with seborrheic dermatitis usually have an overgrowth of Malassezia yeasts, a common type of fungus found on the human skin. These thrive in the oil-rich environment of your skin, such as the scalp. Overgrowth of Malassezia may cause the development of other skin conditions, such as psoriasis, dandruff, and atopic dermatitis.
  • Immunodeficiency. People with a high level of immunodeficiency are at risk of developing seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.
  • Other medical conditions. Skin health conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema, and ringworm, increase the risk of dandruff development.
  • Increased androgen hormones. High androgen levels can cause the skin to produce more oil. Also, health issues such as PCOS, Cushing’s disease may cause increased production of androgen hormones.

Symptoms & Preventive Measures for Dandruff

The following preventative measures will help in addressing the dryness of the scalp.

  • Reduce the frequency of hair washing
  • Use gentle, moisturizing shampoo
  • Manage stress levels and quit smoking
  • Stay well-hydrated
  • Use a humidifier in your home

Diagnosis of Dandruff

Depending on the appearance of the scalp and the presence of symptoms, dandruff may be diagnosed using the following methods.

  • Physical examination. A physical examination of the scalp is being done in order to examine the signs of flakes, redness, or inflammation.
  • Medical history. Your doctor may discuss your medical history, including the redness, inflammation, and itchiness.
  • Scalp analysis. In order to examine the scalp more closely and provide the most effective dandruff treatment, your doctor uses a specialized tool or microscope.

How to Get Rid of Dandruff?

Anti-dandruff Shampoos

  • Medicated shampoos. Medicated shampoos containing active ingredients, such as zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or coal tar, help in reducing the fungus and controlling the formation of flakes.
  • Tar-based shampoos. These help in slowing down the rapid growth of skin cells on the scalp.
  • Salicylic acid-based shampoos. These help in exfoliating and removing the flakes from the scalp.

Scalp Treatments for Dandruff

  • Topical steroids. In the severe cases of dandruff, these help in reducing the inflammation and controlling the itching.
  • Anti-fungal creams. It helps in treating the dandruff that is caused by the fungal overgrowth.

Hair Care Routine

  • Shampoo the hair regularly. Regular washing of the hair and scalp using a mild shampoo helps in removing the oils and skin cells.
  • Avoid harsh products. Avoid excessive use of styling products and use gentle hair care products.
