What is Embryo Freezing?

Also known as embryo cryopreservation, embryo freezing is a popular method of preserving fertility. It involves freezing one or more embryos for future use. It uses IVF, which creates embryos by removing eggs from a woman's ovary and fertilizing them with sperm in a lab. Embryos are frozen to keep them viable for years. After being frozen, the embryos can be thawed and inserted into a woman's uterus.

Embryo Freezing Treatment Methods

The patient’s approval is required for embryo freezing. To make an embryo, the doctor would use the sperm to fertilise one or more of your collected eggs. After that, it takes five to seven days for the embryo to mature. There are two techniques for freezing embryos. Both techniques include cooling the embryonic cells using a number of cryoprotectants, which are essential for preventing damage to the biological tissue.

  • Slow Freezing Technique

In this procedure, the embryos are slowly cooled using a specialised machine. After adding the cryoprotectants, the embryos are frozen. Liquid nitrogen, which is -321 degrees Fahrenheit, is then used to store the frozen embryos. The embryo procedure takes roughly two hours to finish, using this method.

  • The Vitrification Process

It is the most used method of freezing embryos. Using this technique, the embryo is submerged in an extremely concentrated cryoprotectant solution. After that, the embryo is submerged in liquid nitrogen, which rapidly freezes it and gives it the appearance of a gas. The biological activity and cell growth of the embryos cease when they are frozen.

It is interesting to note that even after several years of freezing, the embryos remain in the same biological age at which they were frozen.

Who Should Opt for Embryo Freezing?

Below are a few of the ideal scenarios.

  • Women having an early menopausal family history
  • Women receiving treatment for cancer, hormone therapy, and other illnesses
  • Women who are vulnerable to harm may choose to freeze their embryos
  • Couples planning to delay pregnancy for non-medical reasons
  • Fertilization procedures like IVF and ICSI may sometimes result in the creation of multiple embryos, which can be frozen for future IVF procedures
  • Couples who want to save additional embryos for a future IVF round to reduce the cost of IVF
  • Couples who want to donate those extra embryos for medical research, and those who are trying to conceive

What is the Process of Freezing Embryos?

The embryo freezing process consists of the following steps.

  1. Ovarian stimulation: The patient is given hormone medications that cause controlled ovarian hyperstimulation and stimulate the ovaries to generate more eggs.
  2. Egg Retrieval: The mature eggs are then extracted during a simple surgical procedure, guided by ultrasound. In the laboratory, eggs are fertilized using sperm.
  3. Embryo Development: For a few days, the fertilised eggs, now embryos, are cultivated in a regulated setting. The quality and development of embryos are closely observed.
  4. Selection of Embryos: The healthiest and viable embryos are chosen for transfer, and any extra healthy embryos can be cryopreserved for later use.
  5. Cryopreservation: The selected embryos are preserved using a procedure known as vitrification, which involves quick freezing to avoid ice crystal formation. It ensures that embryos don’t die when frozen.
  6. Storage: Specialised cryopreservation tanks are used to store the frozen embryos, allowing them to stay for a long time, sometimes years, without losing quality.
  7. Embryo transfer: Then, the frozen embryos are thawed and placed into the uterus. The surgery is carried out in accordance with the patient’s menstrual cycle.

Embryo Freezing Pros and Cons

Embryo freezing is beneficial for people with the following conditions.

  • Growing older
  • Infertility issues
  • Planning to postpone pregnancy for a couple of years if you have career obligations or are pursuing higher education
  • Undergoing fertility-damaging treatments, such as chemotherapy or pelvic radiation therapy for cancer
  • If concerned about growing older, single women may decide to store their eggs or develop embryos with donor sperm

Side Effects of Freezing Embryos

Some of the common side-effects of freezing embryos are as follows:-

  • Stress
  • Bloating
  • Bleeding
  • Cramping
  • Constipation
  • Hormonal variation
  • Ovarian overstimulation
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge

Rest and several over-the-counter medications can usually manage the negative effects of freezing embryos. Consult your doctor for individualised advice.
