About Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of both inner and outer labia, also known as labia minora and labia majora. This surgery repairs damage to the labia caused by lifestyle, disease, or childbirth. The enlarged labia can cause discomfort during intercourse, sports activities, and wearing tight clothes or undergarments. Labiaplasty has several functional advantages. Exercise, hygiene, urinary tract infections (UTI), and sexual and other physical activities can be challenging for many women with elongated labia. This surgery can be performed with other female genital cosmetic or surgical procedures like vaginoplasty or vaginal rejuvenation.

Labiaplasty Journey

Before Labiaplasty Surgery

  • The purpose of the pre-operative examination is to familiarise the patient with the surgeon and the procedure. The gynecologist physically examines the female to check the condition and make sure she is fit for the surgery and looks for any physiological factors that could influence the surgery’s outcome.
  • In addition, the patient’s concerns and questions about labiaplasty are addressed.

During Labiaplasty Surgery

The procedure shortens or reshapes the vaginal lips. The unwanted tissue is cut away with a scalpel or a laser, and the loose edge is stitched up with dissolvable stitches. The whole procedure takes about one to two hours and is carried out under anesthesia. There are two ways of performing labiaplasty:

  • The extra tissue of the labia minora is removed and proportioned to the labia majora during edge resection.
  • By cutting wedge-shaped slivers of skin out of the center of the labia minora, wedge resection preserves the original labial margins. Dissolvable sutures are then used to stitch the remaining skin together.

How to Prepare for Labiaplasty

A few things to follow before labiaplasty surgery are:

  • Choose the right doctor. While cosmetic vaginal surgeries can be done by both- gynecologists and plastic surgeons, it is best if you do a thorough read on your health, discomfort, needs, and expectations. Based on the same, choose a doctor that best suits your needs. Typically, an Ob-gynecologist trained in cosmetic gynecology is the safest choice
  • Discuss your current health, medication, vitamin, and supplements thoroughly with your doctor. In case you are on blood thinners, your doctor would ask you to stop taking them a few days before surgery. They are known to increase the risk of excessive bleeding.
  • Doctors advise abstaining from sex for a month before the procedure.
  • Avoid eating or drinking anything post-midnight before the surgery. It helps avoid any complications related to anesthesia.
  • Take enough rest before the surgery so that the body is fully prepared for the procedure. Get at least 9 hours of sleep.
  • Do not shave the surgical site yourself. A simple cut could risk unwanted infection and septic.

What are the Possible Risks/Side Effects of Labiaplasty?

Risks or side effects are extremely rare with advancements in medical sciences. In fact, LASER labiaplasty reduces the risk of complications to less than 5%.

However, as with any surgery, your body takes some time to heal itself. Some of the possible side effects during this time include-

  • Mild bleeding
  • Infection
  • Hematoma
  • Temporary numbness
  • Chronic dryness
  • Decreased sensitivity around the vulva
  • Mild discomfort during sexual intercourse in the initial days of the recovery

All these side effects and risks are easily manageable with the post-operative instructions prescribed by the doctor. However, if the itching, swelling or bleeding persists even after a week, please consult your gynecologist immediately. It could be a sign of a yeast or bacterial infection. It could also be an allergic reaction to a medication. In such a case, you would need added medications.

How to Recover after Labiaplasty?

  • Doctors advise the following tips to quickly recover after labiaplasty:
  • Take complete bed rest for the first 24 hours.
  • If the site itches, swells, or pains, use ice packs to relieve the discomfort.
  • As you recover, do not wipe, only gently pat dry. Keep the surgical site free of moisture and dirt.
  • Start gentle walking after one day of operation. It would help with blood circulation.
  • For the first 24 hours, the patient is advised to complete bed rest.
  • Wear only loose-fitting cotton fabric clothes to ensure that the vaginal area is breathable, ensuring no germs are collected.
  • Do not use perfumed lotions, deodorants, soaps, or vaginal washes before six weeks from the surgery. Use only clear water and make sure you keep the vagina clean and moisture-free.
  • Do not use tampons or menstrual cups until your vagina completely heals from the surgery (typically 5-6 weeks). Instead, use soft sanitary pads during menstruation. Drink a lot of water. Keep yourself hydrated. It would help you heal.
  • Eat meals with high fiber content. It will help make your bowel movements easier.
  • Do not swim/ lift heavy weights/ physically exert yourself before complete clearance from your gynecologist.
  • Resume sexual activities only after getting confirmation from the doctor that it is entirely safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the top doctors for Labiaplasty in Thrissur?

At Pristyn Care, we have a team of highly experienced and qualified doctors who specialize in providing advanced treatments with a patient-first approach.

Is it safe to get labiaplasty?

Yes. It is a safe and effective procedure that is performed for both functional as well as aesthetic benefits.

Is it painful to get labiaplasty surgery?

No, throughout the procedure, the patient is given an anesthetic, either local or general, depending on the type of technique and severity of the labia. As a result, there will be minimal pain or discomfort during the procedure.

How long will the swelling and itching last after the labiaplasty surgery?

Swelling, post-surgery pain, and itching should all be significantly reduced within one week. Swelling can last for two to three days following surgery. After one week, the swelling, the initial pain due to surgery, and itching should be significantly reduced. Itching is normal following labiaplasty for the first week while everything heals. If itching persists, it could be an indication of a yeast or bacterial infection, or an allergic reaction to the medication, so consult your surgeon if that’s the case.

How to know if I have abnormal labia?

No labia is abnormal. Just as we are all different, so are our genitals, their shape, size, and structure. However, at times, inner or outer labia can enlarge unusually because of stress during pregnancy, childbirth, age, or hormonal fluctuations.

If you feel chafing, rashes, pain, and itching very regularly around your labia lips, or frequently experience swelling around your vulva, chances are that your labia has enlarged over time. In such a case, we suggest you consult a gynecologist immediately and discuss the best possible treatment after proper diagnosis.

Why do my labia keep growing?

There is no definite reason for the growth of labia. It could either be shaped a certain way right from birth (congenital reasons), happen because of genetics, or enlarge over time because of hormonal fluctuations during puberty, pregnancy, childbirth, lactation, or menopause. This is entirely normal, common, and treatable.

How to make labia smaller at home?

Unfortunately, no medicine, creams, ointment, or home remedy can help reduce the size of an enlarged labia. Labiaplasty surgery is the only proven way to reduce or reshape the enlarged labia lips.

Can labiaplasty alter my ability for childbirth?

No. Labiaplasty does not alter your ability for childbirth. Labiaplasty is performed only on the outer vulvar region, while the reproductive organs such as the uterus, ovaries, or fallopian tubes lie way above it. Since none of either is invaded during the procedure, labiaplasty does not alter your reproductive abilities.

Are the results of labiaplasty permanent?

No. No surgery, whether cosmetic or otherwise, is permanent in nature. Our bodies change with age and that’s only natural. However, yes, the labiaplasty results are generally long-term and, depending on the type and method of surgery used, may sustain for more than 10-15 years.

Does insurance cover labiaplasty surgery?

No, labiaplasty is considered an elective cosmetic procedure, that is, a surgery you undergo out of ‘choice’ and not ‘medical necessity. Therefore, it is not covered under insurance.
