Flawless dental implant treatment in Delhi

Dental implant, also known as a teeth implant and teeth transplant, is a permanent tooth replacement of missing or mobile teeth. It is often performed for edentulous patients or patients with multiple missing teeth. The treatment begins with the screw insertion, ends with prosthetic tooth placement, and often lasts about 3-6 months. Often known for their lifetime success, dental implants are fixed in the patient’s mouth and have a success rate of over 90-95% over a period of 10 years, even in completely edentulous patients with jaw degeneration.

Dental Implant - Diagnosis and Procedure

Whether the dentist needs to replace one missing tooth or multiple, dental implants are a reliable, long-term, and promising treatment option. They are as close to natural teeth and provide the patient with almost perfect aesthetics regarding their teeth. However, before placing an implant, the doctor needs to conduct a thorough examination to determine the number and type of implants needed, the degree of jaw degeneration, etc.

Pre-prosthetic implant imaging includes an appraisal of the implant site, determination of the bone quality and quantity, assessment of the alveolar process, and detection of oral pathologies surrounding the operative site. The dentist will use oral radiographs and photographs, along with a smile analysis of the patient to determine the treatment plan. Radiographs required for dental implants are panoramic x-ray (OPG), occlusal x-rays, bitewing x-rays, periapical x-ray, cephalometric x-ray, CT scans, etc.

The dentist will also take a comprehensive medical history as implants can’t be performed for patients that have uncontrolled diabetes or hypertension, etc.

Treatment

Following the diagnosis, your dentist will begin the treatment process. Your treatment plan will be formulated based on the results of the diagnostic tests. Often the patient may require additional surgical procedures like bone grafting, jaw augmentation, ridge expansion, sinus lift, etc., to facilitate the success of the treatment. These surgeries can be either performed at the same time as implant surgery or months before.

Implant surgery is performed as a single-day procedure under local anesthesia. The patient is anesthetized and the surgeon fixes an implant screw in the patient’s jaw. A temporary denture is placed on the implant to maintain an aesthetic appearance. Following the surgery, the patient has to come for follow-up appointments to ensure that the implant is integrating properly with the jaw bone.

When the osseointegration is complete, the dentist performs a minor surgery to remove the tissue on the top of the screw and attach an abutment in its place. About 2 weeks after the placement of the abutment, the artificial tooth prosthesis is attached to the gums.

The teeth can be removable or fixed. Removable teeth can be taken out for repair or cleaning but fixed teeth are permanently cemented into the jaws. Since implants provide a very strong attachment, several teeth can be placed as a bridge on a single implant.

Every patient is different and so is their implant need. Book an appointment with the best dentists in Delhi for a personalized dental treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Question

Are dental implant surgeries painful?

The dental implant surgery is performed under local anesthesia, so you will only feel slight pressure during the surgery. There is slight localized pain that usually lasts for 6-7 days, but it can be managed through over-the-counter painkillers. You can resume your work/school within 1-3 days of the surgery.

Is dental implant procedure safe?

Dental implants are among the safest, most long-lasting, and natural-looking substitutes for missing teeth. In very rare cases, there can be slight complications like nerve damage, sinus issues, infection, etc., but they can be easily diagnosed and treated in time.

What should I eat after dental implant surgery?

After implant surgery, you should eat soft foods that are easy to chew. Try to avoid eating from the operated side of the jaw. If you don’t have any teeth on the other side of the jaw, then stick to a liquid diet. You can have soft-serve ice cream as that will soothe your jaw and help reduce the swelling. You can eat soft fruits, oatmeal, yogurt, mashed potatoes, eggs, and other soft foods at this time. After a week or so, you can start eating more foods, but you should still avoid hard, crunchy, chewy, sticky, hot, and spicy foods.

Can dental implants fall out?

No, generally, dental implants never fall out. In some cases, the dental attachment or the abutment screw can fall out, but if that happens you do not need to panic. You can go to your dentist for the repair of the abutment, using the fallen-out piece or by placing a new abutment.

How to maintain dental hygiene after dental implant treatments?

After the surgery, use a soft-bristle brush to brush at least twice a day, but make sure to avoid brushing the surgical site directly. Use a water flosser or a crown & bridge floss to floss daily. You should also rinse your mouth with warm salt water in the morning, after each meal, and before bed starting 24 hours after the surgery.

Can I get dental implants if I have gum disease?

Yes, you can get dental implants but you will need treatment for your gum disease before that. Gum diseases often lead to recession and bone loss which can make it difficult to place implants. If you have extensive bone loss, you may need a bone graft procedure before implant surgery.

What do dental implants feel like?

You may feel an odd or weird feeling in your mouth after the implant/teeth placement as your mouth is not used to having a tooth anymore. You may also have a little tenderness in your gums along with extra saliva production, but as you get used to the implant, the weirdness will disappear.

Can I smoke after dental implant surgery?

If you are a regular smoker, you should stop smoking at least 3-4 weeks before the surgery and not smoke again for at least 2 months after the surgery. Smoking can delay your recovery and the osseointegration process, which can lead to the failure of the implant to bond with its surrounding jaw bone.

Are dental implants safe for senior citizens?

Yes, dental implants are completely safe for all people, no matter what their age is. In fact, for older people who’ve lost all their teeth, full mouth rehabilitation through all-on-4 implants or all-on-6 implants is the best treatment option.

However, dental implants are usually avoided in patients who take steroid or immunosuppressive medications or patients who grind or clench their teeth habitually. Implant surgery is also avoided in patients with uncontrolled diabetes.

Can implants damage the teeth around them?

In rare cases, if the implant site is infected, it can damage the surrounding teeth and blood vessels. This is why most doctors insist on regular checkups after the surgery to ensure that the surgical site is healing without any complications or infection.

Can I use dental implants for removable dentures?

Yes, if a patient cannot afford to get fixed teeth using implants, they can get implant abutments that can serve as support for removable dentures.

How many implants does a completely edentulous patient need?

Depending on the amount of jaw space and degree of bone loss in the patient’s jaws, they may need 6-8 implants in the maxilla and 4 to 6 implants in the mandible for full mouth fixed dental prosthesis.

What are the different types of implants?

There are three types of implants – Endosteal Implants, Subperiosteal Implants, and Zygomatic Implants. Endosteal implants are typically small screws made of titanium that are placed in the jawbone. They are the most commonly used types of implants. Subperiosteal implants are placed under the gums but on or above the jawbone in patients with a significant degree of bone loss who need bone augmentation before the surgery. Zygomatic implants are maxillary implants that are placed in severely resorbed jaws where augmentation is not possible.

What can cause a dental implant to fail?

In some cases, the implant screw can become loose. It usually occurs due to poor oral hygiene after dental implant surgery and is noticeable within the first 1-2 weeks of the surgery. Other factors that can result in dental implant failure are:

  • Misalignment of the implant: Proper implant positioning is a big contributor to its success. The implant should be fully integrated with its surrounding bone for it to complete osseointegration, but if that does not happen, the metal screw of the implant remains visible around the gums, which leads to aesthetic failure of the implants.
  • Ill-fitting implants: If the dental surgeon introduces an implant screw that is too small or too big for its surrounding bone, it will not integrate with the bone properly, resulting in a longer healing period or failure of the implant screw to osseointegrate with the bone.
  • Peri-implantitis: Peri-implantitis and other dental infections can result in implant failure. It usually occurs due to poor oral hygiene, smoking, or in diabetic patients. Therefore, proper health and hygiene maintenance are necessary, especially for the first 3-4 weeks after the surgery.
  • Failed osseointegration: Osseointegration is the process of interlinking between the bone and the implant screw. In a healthy implant, it usually takes a few weeks to a few months, but if the bone health, density, and quantity surrounding the implant are insufficient, then it can result in osseointegration failure and a mobile implant.
  • Nerve damage: If the implant is fixed too close to the facial nerves, then it can result in nerve irritation or injury. It usually only happens if the dentist is inexperienced and does not place the screw properly.
  • Poorly taken impressions: If the impressions taken for replacement teeth are not accurate, then there can be a misfit between the gums and the implant, leading to gum disease, bite issues, occlusion problems, etc.
  • Allergic reactions: In rare cases, if you are allergic to the implant or prosthetic tooth material, it can lead to allergic reactions and implant failure. To avoid this, your dentist will take a detailed medical history and perform an allergy test before the surgery itself.

The most common signs of dental implant failure are severe pain and discomfort with swelling in the gums. Contact your dentist immediately if that happens.

What are the types of dental implant surgeries?

Generally, there are 3 types of dental implant procedures that are performed to restore the function of missing teeth:

  • Single-tooth implant: A single-tooth dental implant is usually performed in patients that are only missing a single tooth. It is usually performed if the patient is missing either a crucial molar required for occlusion and chewing or an anterior tooth leading to poor aesthetics and smile. A single implant screw, abutment, and crown are placed in the jaw to restore the tooth.
  • All-on-4 implant: All-on-4 technique is usually performed for people missing a significant number of teeth, for example completely edentulous or partially edentulous patients with an edentulous arch. During the procedure, the entire dental arch is covered with 4 implants that can be used to attach a bridge of a maximum of 14 teeth, i.e., 4 incisors, 2 canines, 4 premolars, and 4 molars in one arch.
  • All-on-6 implant: Similar to all-on-4, all-on-6 implants are normally performed for patients with a completely edentulous arch or mouth. 6 implant screws are fixed in one arch to fix a bridge of a maximum of 16 teeth, i.e., 4 incisors, 2 canines, 4 premolars, and 6 molars in one arch. It is usually performed for patients with less bone loss who do not require any bone grafting. It has a quicker recovery period, easier maintenance, and better aesthetics than dentures and all-on-4 bridges.
