Yes, if your injury is limited to an ACL tear, you can start walking with a torn ACL once the pain and swelling have subsided. However, it is not recommended as it poses a risk of permanent damage to the knee joint. It also increases the risk of the development of arthritis in the knee joint.
Swimming is usually recommended after ACL surgery as it strengthens the quadriceps (hamstring muscle), which helps support the tendon graft. However, swimming and running should be avoided for at least 4-5 months after the surgery. If you want to, you can swim with just your arms without paddling your feet 2-3 months after the surgery with your doctor’s approval.
Swelling after knee arthroscopy is very common, especially near incisions. It usually dissipates within a few weeks with over-the-counter medication and ice massage. Physiotherapy after the surgery promotes recovery and helps resolve the swelling much faster.
