About Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a procedure to fix blurry vision caused by a cloudy lens in the eye. A cataract makes it difficult to see clearly. Your doctor may suggest surgery if it affects your daily life. Typically, an eye doctor or ophthalmologist performs this surgery in a clinic or hospital, and you usually do not have to stay overnight. It is a common and safe procedure. During cataract eye surgery, the doctor will remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear artificial lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL). The surgery typically takes less than an hour and is generally effective for most people.

Treatments Available in Janakpuri

Cataract surgery in Janakpuri offers a chance to improve your vision by removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a new, artificial one called an intraocular lens (IOL). At Pristyn Care, various advanced techniques are available to cater to different patient needs.

1. Phacoemulsification

Phacoemulsification, or phaco surgery, is a popular technique for cataract eye surgery. Here, sound waves (ultrasound) break the cataract into tiny bits, making it easier for the doctor to remove it through a small cut. This method is less invasive, meaning there’s less damage to the eye, and it often does not require stitches. Most patients can go home the same day because it is done in the outpatient department (OPD).

2. MICS (Micro-Incision Cataract Surgery)

MICS is another step forward in cataract surgery. This approach uses even smaller cuts than phacoemulsification, speeding up recovery and reducing discomfort. The surgeon uses special tools to extract the cloudy lens and replace it with an IOL through a very tiny incision. This procedure is also performed on an outpatient basis, allowing you to return home the same day. The quicker recovery time means you can return to your routine activities sooner.

3. FLACS (Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery)

FLACS takes precision to another level by using a laser for parts of the surgery. The laser makes precise cuts and helps break apart the cataract carefully. This method reduces manual work by the surgeon and enhances accuracy. Although FLACS might be more expensive than other types.

4. SICS (Small Incision Cataract Surgery)

SICS is widely used in places where high-tech equipment might not be as available. It involves making a slightly larger incision than phacoemulsification but still smaller than traditional methods. The cataract is removed as one piece without breaking it up inside the eye. SICS can be cost-effective and is often chosen for its straightforward approach, especially in resource-limited settings. Recovery for SICS may be slightly longer than that for phacoemulsification or MICS, but it generally yields good outcomes.

At Pristyn Care, these diverse cataract surgery types are tailored to fit individual patient needs, ensuring a blend of safety, effectiveness, and affordability.

Eligibility for Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery can be helpful if cloudy vision is impacting your life. Whether you’re struggling to read the newspaper or feeling unsafe to drive, cataracts can be quite a bother. Here are the eligibility criteria for the surgery:

  • Visual Acuity: Often, doctors suggest surgery if your best-corrected sight in the affected eye is 6/12 or worse. Depending on where you live, this threshold can differ based on healthcare policies.
  • Lifestyle Impact: When cataracts affect how you live your life—maybe they make it hard to drive or read—surgery becomes a good option.
  • Occupational Needs: If your job needs sharp eyesight, like watchmaking, you might be eligible even if your vision is slightly better.
  • Other Health Conditions: People with other eye-related issues, like glaucoma or diabetes, might also be considered for surgery.

Initial Examinations

Before deciding on surgery, doctors do some basic tests to check if it’s right for you:

  • Visual Acuity Test: This checks how clearly you can see with each eye.
  • Eye Structure Exam: A slit lamp helps examine the structure of your eyes.
  • Retinal Exam: With dilated pupils, doctors can see the retina better.
  • Fluid Pressure Test: Measures pressure in your eyes to rule out glaucoma.

How is Cataract Surgery Performed?

Cataract eye surgery is a common procedure that helps restore clear vision. Here’s a look at what happens during the surgery:

  • Anaesthesia: Your eye will be numbed using local anaesthesia drops or an injection, keeping you awake but comfortable during the procedure.
  • Incision: A small cut is made in your cornea. In extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE), a surgical blade is used to make an incision; for laser-assisted cataract surgery, a femtosecond laser may be used.
  • Phacoemulsification: An ultrasound probe breaks up the cloudy lens, which is then gently removed from the eye.
  • Lens Implantation: An artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is placed into the empty capsule where your natural lens used to be.
  • Closing the Incision: The small incision might heal on its own without stitches.

How To Prepare For Cataract Surgery?

Preparing for cataract surgery involves a few simple steps:

  • Eye Examination: You’ll undergo a comprehensive eye exam to check your overall eye health.
  • Medical History Review: Discuss any current medications or health conditions with your doctor.
  • Stop Certain Medications: Your doctor may ask you to stop some medicines before surgery.
  • Plan for Post-Surgery Care: Arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.

Post-Procedure Care

After cataract surgery, following a few simple guidelines can help ensure a smooth recovery and clear vision:

  • Rest and Avoid Stress: Allow your eyes time to heal and minimise physical activity.
  • Use Prescribed Eye Drops: These drops aid healing and prevent infections.
  • Avoid Bending or Heavy Lifting: Such activities increase pressure on your eyes and should be avoided temporarily.
  • Follow-Up Appointments: Keep these appointments to monitor how well your eyes are healing.
  • Avoid Rubbing Your Eye: Protecting your eye from injury by not rubbing it.
  • Wear an Eye Shield at Night: This protects your eye while sleeping.
  • Resume Activities Slowly: Gradually return to normal activities as advised by your doctor.

I would like to share my experience regarding my recent eye treatment. I contacted Pristyn Care as I experienced blurred vision in my right eye. I am a cataract-treated patient, having undergone surgery approximately 15–20 years ago, and recently noticed a reduction in visibility. I was referred to Dr. Priti Maan at Sight Avenue (Dr. Suraj Munjal Eye Hospital), where I was advised to undergo YAG capsulotomy (capsule cleaning). The procedure was performed using laser treatment by Dr. Priti Maan, followed by a prescription of eye drops for seven days. Post-treatment, my vision in the right eye has improved significantly, and I am feeling much better. I do have a few minor issues, which are expected to be addressed after the seven-day medication course. It was clearly confirmed after the procedure that my retina and lens are in good condition, and no replacement or further surgical intervention is required. I am very satisfied with the transparent consultation, treatment, and guidance provided by Sight Avenue. Thank you so much, Dr. Priti Maan, for your professional care and support.
