Why is it important to see a gynecologist?

  • Scheduling an appointment with a gynecologist can be a little intimidating but should not stop you from visiting your doctor. During a routine visit, a gynecologist performs breasts & pelvic exams. The breast exam allows the doctor to check for lumps that can be cancerous or other breast abnormalities, and Pelvic exams can detect potentially cancerous cells. An annual preventative OB-GYN visit can save lives. Here are a few different reasons why you should consider booking your appointment.
To check for STDs – STDs are sexually transmitted diseases that can be spread by coming in contact with the infected person’s genitals. A gynecologist can examine you for STDs, especially if there are any symptoms like itching, sores, abnormal discharge, etc.
  • Pregnancy- It is always advisable to see your doctor if pregnant to provide the best pregnancy care and tips for safe delivery. Gynecologists also deal with issues related to unwanted pregnancy.Birth Control- It is always helpful to discuss birth control with your gynecologist as they can give important information about the same and provide treatments if required. Birth control becomes helpful, especially when you are not ready for pregnancy.
  • Menstrual problems- It is essential to visit your gynecologist if you have irregular periods, heavy bleeding even in the final days, or months of no menstrual cycle. These can be signs of severe reproductive issues or may lead to critical reproductive problems.
  • Breast Examination- If you are in your 40s, getting a thorough breast exam becomes even more critical, especially if there is a history of breast cancer in the family.

How to take care of your vagina

  • Don’t clean your vagina with anything special. Vagina cleans itself with discharge, and you do not need any special products for the same. This includes douches or intimate washes, which can alter the pH of your vagina and lead to irritation and infection.
  • Discharge with an unusual color or consistency can be a sign of a problem.
  • It’s normal for your vagina to have a slight scent. However, an unusual or too strong fishy smell can indicate bacterial vaginosis and require medical attention.
  • Always wipe front to back after defecation. The opposite way can transfer bacteria from the rectum to the urethra and can cause UTIs.
  • Only use lubes and avoids products like petroleum jelly or oil as a replacement. These products can disbalance your ph balance and lead to problems.
  • Get tested for STIs regularly.

Difference between gynecologist and obstetrician

  • An obstetrician deals with all aspects of pregnancy that includes prenatal care and post-natal care. They can also provide fertility treatments to help you get pregnant and ensure you have a healthy pregnancy so that you deliver a healthy baby. In premature delivery, an obstetrician can also provide guidance in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). They are also trained to handle pregnancy complications. A gynecologist cannot deliver a baby but an obstetrician does.
  • A gynecologist specializes in treating women’s reproductive health. A gynecologist can diagnose and attend to any conditions that affect a woman’s reproductive system, such as the cervix, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, or vagina. Gynecologists also perform recommended health checkups such as breast exams, pap smears, and pelvic exams. They are trained to practice surgeries like hysterectomies, tubal ligations, and abortions. They also provide information on responsible sexual practices, contraceptives, and protection against sexually transmitted diseases. In other words, if it is a non-pregnancy issue related to reproductive organs, a gynecologist will treat and take care of it.

Common Gynecological Problems Faced By Women

Here are a few gynecological medical conditions and disorders that are common in women

  • Ovarian cysts- Fluid-filled sacs or pockets in or on the ovary are known as ovarian cysts. These are usually benign but can cause pain in the pelvis, heaviness, bloating, etc.
  • Endometriosis- Endometriosis is a gynecological problem in which tissue similar to that in the uterine lining develops outside the uterine cavity. This can cause irritation, intense menstrual pain, and fertility problems.
  • PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease)- PCOD/PCOS is a common gynecological problem in which hormonal imbalance causes the ovaries to enlarge and leads to the development of small cysts on the surface of the ovaries. This can cause menstrual issues and adversely affect the woman’s fertility.
  • Vaginal Dryness- Vaginal dryness is usually a result of the thinning of the vaginal walls. This happens majorly due to hormonal changes and aging and can cause discomfort like burning sensation, soreness, pain during sex, etc.
  • Uterine fibroids- Fibroids are benign growths that develop on the surface of the uterus. These fibroids affect the menstrual cycle and cause other troublesome symptoms like cramping, excessive bleeding, bloating, weight gain, etc.
  • Menstrual disorders- Menstrual disorders involve problems like excessive bleeding, irregular periods, intense pain during periods, etc. These can be caused due to physical changes, psychological causes, or side effects of medicines or herbs.
  • Dysmenorrhea (intense menstrual cramps)- Cramping during periods is common. Still, unusual severe cramps (dysmenorrhea) can indicate underlying conditions like fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, uterine or ovarian cysts, endometriosis, etc.
