About Molar Pregnancy

A molar pregnancy occurs when the tissue that normally becomes a fetus instead becomes an abnormal growth in the uterus. It is a rare form of pregnancy, occurring in 0.005 to 0.001% of all pregnancies. The primary reasons for molar pregnancy are the fertilization of empty eggs and the double fertilization of female cells. Molar pregnancy is of two types- complete molar pregnancy and partial molar pregnancy. In a complete molar pregnancy, there is no fetal tissue. While in incomplete molar pregnancy, there exists some residual fetal tissue.

  • Urine Test: The doctor, suggests this test to check the colour and composition of urine. This test also helps in identifying the level of hCG.

Treatment of Molar Pregnancy

Molar pregnancy involves excessive growth of trophoblast cells and delay can lead to serious complications, including a rare form of cancer. Treatment is done by medication or surgery.

  • Medication: Doctors suggest methotrexate to stop rapid growth of hydatidiform moles. Given as a single-dose injection; a second dose may be needed. Avoid ibuprofen and aspirin as they increase side-effect risk.
  • Surgical Treatment: D&C or hysterectomy is suggested depending on severity and GTN risk.
