About Medical Termination of Pregnancy

Medical termination of pregnancy — popularly known as medical abortion and MTP, is a method to terminate an unwanted pregnancy until 7-9 weeks, using medications or a combination of drugs. MTP doesn't involve the usage of anesthesia or surgical procedures and can be done at any registered MTP clinic or hospital.

When MTP fails, miscarriage turns out to be incomplete, pregnancy exceeds nine weeks, or it’s a molar or ectopic pregnancy — surgical procedures are used to remove the embryo and pregnancy tissue from the uterus. Mainly, abortion is done in two ways known as medical abortion and surgical abortion. Which method of abortion is best for you depends on several factors such as the duration and type of pregnancy.

Treatment

Diagnosis

To understand the safest and most feasible abortion method for you, the OBGYN suggests 2 kinds of tests:

  • Pelvic Ultrasound: To understand the type of pregnancy and weeks in gestation.
  • Blood and Urine Tests: To check for any co-morbidities such as anemia, diabetes, low/high blood pressure, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Based on the results of both these tests and your own needs and comfort, the OBGYN suggests the best method to abort.

Medical abortion is done using a combination of two medicines- Mifepristone and Misoprostol. They are commonly known as abortion pills/ RU486/ MTP kit.

The first medicine- ‘Mifepristone’ is taken at the clinic. It blocks the necessary hormone for pregnancy and detaches the embryo from the uterine wall. After that, another medicine- ‘Misoprostol’ is taken within 48 hours to cause uterine contractions and slightly open the cervix and help expulsion. It can be taken both- at home or at the clinic.

The passing of the pregnancy starts within 24 hours of taking the second medicine and takes around 7-10 days to complete.

Right after you pass the pregnancy, please arrange for a follow-up. An ultrasound exam must be taken within 15 days to ensure complete abortion. In case the abortion fails or turns uncomplete, surgical intervention is employed.
