About Medical Termination of Pregnancy

  • Abortion, also called termination of pregnancy, is a procedure to end an unwanted pregnancy. It is mainly done in two ways
  • -
  • Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP)
  • Surgical Termination of Pregnancy (STP) MTP is the procedure to end unwanted pregnancy through medicines. It doesn't require surgery or anesthesia and can be done in an MTP clinic or at home with follow-up meetings with your OB-gynecologist.

However, it is best advised only until 8-9 weeks of pregnancy and must be followed with an ultrasound exam to ensure complete expulsion. Which abortion method is best for you depends on multiple factors including the type and weeks of your pregnancy, general health, and personal choices.

At Pristyn Care, we advise medical termination of pregnancy only until the first 5 weeks of gestation. To know more about your possible treatment options or book an online/offline appointment with our OB-GYN in Lucknow, please call us directly.

Treatment

Diagnosis

Before going ahead with medical termination of pregnancy, the doctor asks the patient to undergo some diagnostic tests, such as pelvic ultrasound to confirm the duration of pregnancy and rule out other underlying medical conditions such as ectopic pregnancy or molar pregnancy.

The OB-GYN also checks if the patient is anemic or has any other co-morbidities such as diabetes, low/high blood pressure, or sexually transmitted diseases. Based on the findings of the diagnostic tests, the doctor decides the best method to terminate the pregnancy [either MTP or surgical abortion].

Medical Termination of Pregnancy involves using a combination of two different medicines called Mifepristone and Misoprostol. The first medicine mifepristone blocks the necessary hormone for pregnancy and detaches the embryo from the uterine wall. This is given in the clinic in presence of the doctor.

Then, the woman is asked to take the second medicine called misoprostol within 24-48 hours of the first medicine. Misoprostol can be taken in the clinic as well as at home. It causes the uterus to contract and open the cervix slightly to expel the pregnancy.

After that, the termination of pregnancy starts within 24 hours. The woman may experience slight fever, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting during this period. However, as the woman starts passing the pregnancy, these symptoms go away gradually.

Usually, the passing of the pregnancy is very painful, uncomfortable, and causes excessive bleeding and cramping. The entire process of Medical Termination of Pregnancy may take between 7-10 days to complete.

Just after the termination of the pregnancy, the woman should consult with the doctor immediately. The doctor performs an ultrasound to ensure complete abortion. In case, the abortion fails or turns out to be incomplete, the doctor advises surgical procedure to terminate pregnancy completely.

The most common side effects of Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP)

Gastrointestinal side effects, fever, warmth, chills, headache, and dizziness are the most common side effects of MTP.

  • 01. Gastrointestinal Side Effects
  • During the entire process of MTP, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting are most commonly reported by women following the use of Misoprostol. These side effects usually go away in a few days without the need for any medical interventions.
  • However, the doctor may prescribe antiemetic and anti-diarrhoeal medicine if needed. The doctor may also prescribe ORS in case of vomiting or if diarrhea becomes severe. Loperamide tablets may also be prescribed for diarrhea.02. Fever, Warmth, and Chills
  • These are short-lived and self-limiting side effects that generally don’t need medical treatment. However, if you are planning for MTP, you should know that you may experience these symptoms during the termination of pregnancy.

Usually, there is almost no risk of infection after medical abortion. However, if you experience persistent fever (>38 Degree Celcius for two readings for an hour apart), this may indicate infection. In such a case, you should consult with your doctor immediately. The doctor can evaluate the fever and treat the same accordingly.03. Headache and DizzinessReports suggest that some women complain of headaches and dizziness during the process of MTP. The doctor usually treats headaches with non-narcotic analgesics (also known as painkillers) and mild dizziness of short duration is managed by hydration.

The doctors advise the woman to take plenty of fluids and rest as well as exercise for a few minutes to hydrate the body.

If you are planning to end your pregnancy with the help of medicines, you should first discuss the pros and cons of this method with your doctor. After that, you should go further.
