Diagnosis
Before going ahead with medical termination of pregnancy, the doctor asks the patient to undergo some diagnostic tests, such as pelvic ultrasound to confirm the duration of pregnancy and rule out other underlying medical conditions such as ectopic pregnancy or molar pregnancy.
The OB-GYN also checks if the patient is anemic or has any other co-morbidities such as diabetes, low/high blood pressure, or sexually transmitted diseases. Based on the findings of the diagnostic tests, the doctor decides the best method to terminate the pregnancy [either MTP or surgical abortion].
Procedure
Medical Termination of Pregnancy involves using a combination of two different medicines called Mifepristone and Misoprostol. The first medicine mifepristone blocks the necessary hormone for pregnancy and detaches the embryo from the uterine wall. This is given in the clinic in presence of the doctor.
Then, the woman is asked to take the second medicine called misoprostol within 24-48 hours of the first medicine. Misoprostol can be taken in the clinic as well as at home. It causes the uterus to contract and open the cervix slightly to expel the pregnancy.
After that, the termination of pregnancy starts within 24 hours. The woman may experience slight fever, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting during this period. However, as the woman starts passing the pregnancy, these symptoms go away gradually.
Usually, the passing of the pregnancy is very painful, uncomfortable, and causes excessive bleeding and cramping. The entire process of Medical Termination of Pregnancy may take between 7-10 days to complete.
Just after the termination of the pregnancy, the woman should consult with the doctor immediately. The doctor performs an ultrasound to ensure complete abortion. In case, the abortion fails or turns out to be incomplete, the doctor advises surgical procedure to terminate pregnancy completely.
