What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty also is the surgical procedure to reduce the size of the labia minora - the inner lips of the vulva. This surgery repairs damage to the labia caused by lifestyle, disease, or childbirth. The enlarged labia can cause discomfort during intercourse, sports activities, and while wearing tight clothes or undergarments. This surgery can be performed along with other female genital cosmetic or surgical procedures like vaginoplasty, or vaginal rejuvenation.

The American Society of Plastic Surgery suggests that there has been an increase in the number of labiaplasty surgeries since 2015. A report published by the organization in 2016 states that the number of labiaplasty surgeries rose by 39 percent in 2016 compared to the previous year.

Doctor Doing a Surgery

The gynecologist physically examines the female’s labia to check the condition and make sure she is fit for the surgery.

The procedure shortens or reshapes the vaginal lips. The unwanted tissue is cut away with a scalpel or a laser, and the loose edge is stitched up with dissolvable stitches. The whole procedure takes about one to two hours and is carried out under the influence of either general anesthesia or local anesthesia.

There are basically two ways of reducing the labia minora:

  • edge reduction - The gynecologist trims the excess edges of the labia
  • wedge reduction - The gynecologist cuts away the wedge-shaped labia skin but maintains the original labia edges

Tops 5 benefits of labiaplasty surgery

Higher sexual confidence - After labiaplasty, the vaginal lips become streamlined and it gets a new look. If multiple vaginal childbirths have affected your vaginal lips, this is the best cosmetic gynecology surgical treatment. The surgery not only enhances the vaginal look but also boosts a woman's sexual confidence.

Improved vaginal aesthetics - During labiaplasty, the size, color and texture, and all other aspects of the vaginal lips can be improved. Labiaplasty is the most common vaginal rejuvenation treatment that makes the vaginal walls neater, more aligned, and more visually appealing.

Better comfort - If the vaginal walls are oversized, it becomes difficult for the woman to wear tight-fitting clothes and undergarments. There can be problems like rashes and itching. Through labiaplasty surgery, a woman can get these issues addressed and get comfortable vaginal lips.

No problems wearing undergarments or sportswear - After labiaplasty, most women report heightened comfortability in wearing undergarments and lingeries of all sorts. They also report reduced uncountability in wearing sportswear and feel an increased level of confidence with their own body.

Improved hygiene - Uneven size and texture of the labia may create hygiene issues. If the vaginal lips are uneven in size, there are chances that bacteria might get trapped in the folds of the extra tissues which may later cause infection. Having the labia surgically reduced not only improves hygiene in the women but also prevents any potential risks of infections in the vagina.

Are there any risks associated with labiaplasty surgery?

  • With any surgery, comes a certain amount of risk. Labiaplasty is not a very risky surgery, and there are no major risks or complications associated with the surgery. However, in rare situations, women may face the following risks:dryness in the labia
  • decreased sensation in the vulvar area
  • numbness
  • vaginal scarring that leads to pain during sexual intercourse
  • bleeding and infection at the surgery area

It is to be remembered that the primary purpose of the labia to protect the vaginal opening. In case the labiaplasty surgeon removes too much skin from the labia, the labia may fail to do what it is supposed to do. If the labia fails to protect the vagina, the pH balance of the vagina may be affected gradually with time.
