What is Laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows the surgeon to have a distinctive view of the internal organs and structures of the abdomen or pelvis. The surgeon during a diagnostic laparoscopy makes a few incisions and inserts a laparoscope [a thin lighted tube attached with a camera] which helps them to view the internal organs and structures.

Sometimes, laparoscopy can also be combined with a surgical procedure. Carried out through a keyhole incision, the procedure involves distention of the abdominal cavity with CO2 gas. It allows the surgeon to use customized Laparoscopic instruments and navigate the internal organs and tissues to perform various surgical procedures.

Who are Laparoscopic Surgeons?

Surgeons who have undergone years of training and are experienced in performing laparoscopic surgeries are known as Laparoscopic Surgeons. These surgeons are experts in carrying out minimally invasive surgeries. Also known as general surgeons, these specialists operate on the sensitive areas of the abdomen with precision.

Preparation for a Laparoscopic surgery

The patient is given a set of pre-surgery instructions to prevent any risks or complications during the surgery. Based on the medical condition, area of surgery, and the type of laparoscopic procedure, the patient will be asked to:

  • Refrain from drinking water or consuming any food for at least 6 hours prior to the treatment.
  • Avoid drugs like aspirin, blood thinners, and anti-inflammatory medications prior to a week before the surgery.
  • Be prepared for preoperative diagnostic tests such as blood tests, x-rays, CT-scans, and electrocardiography tests.
  • If possible, take a shower on the night before the surgery since the surgical area must be kept dry after the operation.

What happens during Laparoscopic surgery?

  1. General anaesthesia will be administered in order to make sure that the patient will not feel any sort of pain or discomfort during the surgery.
  2. Depending upon the type of the Laparoscopic procedure, the surgeon will make small incisions around the abdomen.
  3. Once the incisions are made, the surgeon will inflate the abdomen using CO2 gas.
  4. The surgeon will then insert a laparoscope [medical device having an inbuilt camera] through one of the incisions to have a clearer view of the internal abdominal structures.
  5. After the surgical procedure is complete, the surgeon will remove the surgical instruments and release most of the gas from the body.
  6. The surgeons will then close the minute incisions using sutures.
  7. The patient will be shifted to a recovery room where the surgeon will monitor all the vital signs such as breathing and heart rate.
  8. Once the reaction of the anesthesia wears off, the patient will be prepared for a discharge based on the overall health conditions.
