What are Gallstones?

The most common disorder of the gallbladder is the formation of gallstones. Gallstones form when excess cholesterol in the bile crystallizes, causing the gallbladder not to empty properly. They can vary in size from a minute grain of sand to a large golf ball. The gallbladder can then become inflamed and/or infected; this is known as cholecystitis. Although an infection can be treated with antibiotics, the repeated formation of gallstones often requires laparoscopic gallstone surgery.

The health care professional uses your medical history, a physical exam, lab and imaging tests to diagnose gallstones. During the physical examination, the doctor also checks your body, asks what you typically eat and check for pain in the abdomen.

Blood tests- measure the amount of bilirubin in your blood. The tests also help determine how well your liver is functioning.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)- A tiny camera is threaded down to your gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It helps your doctor look for gallstones stuck in your bile duct.

Abdominal ultrasound and CT scan to create pictures of your gallbladder. These images can be analyzed to look for signs of gallstones.

Medications will reduce the pain experienced but will not eliminate gallstones. Only surgical methods (called Cholecystectomy) are effective. Cholecystectomy can be performed in two ways- Traditional open surgery or laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. Laparoscopic surgery uses a small incision. The laparoscope has a tiny video camera and surgical tools. The tube, camera and tools are put in through the incision. The surgeon does the surgery while looking at a TV monitor and removes the gallstones. We highly recommend laparoscopic gallbladder removal surgery because :

  • As there is only one incision, you will experience less pain
  • Recovery time is much faster
  • The healed incision will practically leave no scar
  • It will be a great cosmetic value to people, especially ladies
  • You can resume your daily life quickly
  • Perfect for busy professionals

Most-Effective Laparoscopic Gallstones Surgery

Data about population-based cancer registries suggest that Eastern India has high incidence rates of gallbladder cancer (GBC) as compared to other parts of the country. Kolkata ranks 3rd in GBC prevalence in India. The reason people in Kolkata are more susceptible to suffering from this cancer is gallstones. Gallstones cases are rising in the city because of increasing obesity and changing environmental factors, smoking, alcohol, dietary patterns and exercise. Food high in fats, fried food, and a sedentary lifestyle is growing among the urban Kolkata population during the last decade which may add to the risk of gallstones.

Pristyn Care is one such name in the healthcare sector which is using the latest laparoscopic technique for treating gallstones. Our doctors are experts in providing laparoscopic surgeries for not only gallstones but also hernia, appendicitis, hysterectomy, weight loss, small intestinal as well as large intestinal disorders. So don’t wait anymore! Call us to know more about these surgeries!

Some of the advantages of laparoscopic surgery are discussed below-

Reduced risk of bleeding- During laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon makes one or more small incisions in the abdomen. The size of the incision size is so small than the large incision made for open surgery reduces the risk of bleeding.

Less painful healing process- In the case of conservative methods, patients take a longer time to recover as one large incision is made. With laparoscopic surgery, the post-surgical wound is much smaller and properly bandaged with abdominal sutures. This ensures that the healing process is much less painful.

Reduced chances of scarring- Traditionally, before the emergence of this treatment, a surgeon had to cut a patient’s belly that was 6-12 inches long. This allowed doctors to see inside the abdominal or pelvic cavity and operate accordingly. Particularly in overweight and obese patients, there is a high risk of infection in the scar tissue, specifically if the surgical wound is larger.
