Umbilical hernia refers to the protrusion or bulge in the intestine that occurs through the opening in your abdominal muscles near your belly button (navel). These are the second most common type of hernia. Umbilical hernias are very common in infants, but they are pretty prevalent in pregnant women too.
The bulge may become apparent in children when they cry or cough, causing the belly button to protrude. Umbilical hernias in children usually close on their own in the first two years of life. However, in adults, umbilical hernias need surgical repair.
