What is Appendicitis?

Appendicitis refers to the inflammation of the appendix causing pain in the lower right abdomen. An appendix is a finger-shaped pouch that projects from your colon on the lower right side of your abdomen. Appendicitis pain begins around the navel and then moves. Lack of treatment causes inflammation which can worsen and eventually becomes severe. Appendicitis is one of the most common diseases marked by abdominal pain that require immediate surgical treatment. It has the potential of getting ruptured within 48-72 hours.

An appendectomy or surgical removal of the appendix is the only way to prevent and treat this condition. It also occurs when a foreign body gets trapped inside the appendix blocking the opening. Appendicitis is often marked by -

  • Nausea & vomiting
  • Excruciating pain in the abdomen.
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dull pain near the navel

Diagnosis

Several reasons can cause the symptoms like constipation, diarrhea, and vomiting, which may not indicate appendicitis immediately. If the medication for heartburn or gas does not help and you experience pain in the lower abdomen or lower back, it is time to seek medical help. Diagnosing appendicitis can be sensitive as the symptoms are similar to intestinal infection, gallbladder problem, or urinary tract infection. Clinical diagnosis of appendicitis may include:

  • Urine test
  • Blood test
  • Ultrasound
  • CT scan
  • Chest X-ray, in case of a child, to check pneumonia.

Treatment

Sometimes antibiotics can treat infectious appendix, but surgery is the most effective treatment. Appendicitis is a medical emergency that must be treated between 36-72 hours before it gets burst. There are two surgical approaches - open and laparoscopic appendectomies.

Open appendectomy - The surgeon removes the organ through a large incision in the abdomen. The appendix is removed, and the wound is closed with stitches. This is the most preferred procedure for those who have already gone through abdominal surgery or those who have perforated the appendix.

Laparoscopic appendectomy - In this, the surgeon removes the appendix through small incisions in the abdomen. During the procedure, the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide so that the surgeon can clearly see inside. A thin tube-like instrument with a camera attached on top of it so that the surgeon gets a view inside the abdomen. Other surgical instruments are inserted through the rest of the incisions. After taking out the appendix, the small incisions are cleaned and closed using adhesive glue. There are several advantages of laparoscopic surgery over open surgery:

  • Small incisions and minimum scarring
  • Short surgery that takes 30-40 minutes
  • Less postoperative pain
  • Short hospital stay
  • Quick return to normal activities
  • Better cosmetic results
  • Fewer complications

What are the post-surgery preventive measures after appendectomy (appendix removal)?

Post-surgery preventive measures are essential for a surgery to be successful. A surgeon can only perform surgery to treat the condition but it is up to the patient to look after his or her health after the surgery. Following pointer will help your body heal after appendectomy surgery -

Avoid strenuous activity during the first few weeks. If your appendectomy is done via laparoscopic surgery, limit your physical activities for about one week. In case of an open appendectomy, you should limit any major physical activity up to four or five weeks after the surgery. Consult your surgeon regarding the limitations on your activities and when you can resume your daily routine after surgery.

  • Provide support to your abdomen when you cough, laugh or move to help reduce any pain. You can place a pillow over your abdomen and apply pressure for the same.
  • Consult your doctor if you don’t feel any relief from the pain. Being in pain puts extra stress on your body and slows the healing process.
  • Increase your physical activity as you feel up to it. Begin with gradual movements and short walks without excessive strain around the abdomen.
  • Take rest when tired and try to get good sleep. As your body heals, you may feel sleepier than usual.

You can consult your doctor before returning to work or school. Children may be able to return to school less than a week after surgery, but if you’re an adult, you should consult the doctor. However, patients after appendectomy should wait for two to four weeks to resume strenuous activity, such as gym classes or sports.
