What is Varicose Veins?

Varicose Veins are twisted and swollen veins in the legs which may be red, bluish and purple in color. Veins contain one-way valves to ensure that the blood flows towards the heart. If the valves are weak or damaged, blood can back up and overload the pressure on the veins. This excess pressure causes the widening of veins leading to varicose veins.

These are also called varicosities and occur when the veins enlarge or overfill with blood. Varicose usually affects the legs or feet area as prolonged standing and walking upright increases the pressure in the veins of your lower body. Some people may consider it to be spider veins, which is a variation of varicose veins as a cosmetic concern. For other people, varicose veins are more painful and lead to discomfort while sitting or walking. Varicose veins affect almost twice as many women as men and are more common in older women.

Diagnosis

The doctor will have a look at your legs while you're standing or sitting down to diagnose varicose veins. After a physical examination, the doctor will suggest the following tests:

  • Doppler Test: This is a type of ultrasound that uses a transducer. The device detects the direction of blood flow both in the skin veins and the veins that lie deep inside the skin. It indicates where the veins have emerged from and help in the planning of any operation that might be required.
  • Ultrasound scan (duplex): It allows a detailed examination of your deep veins particularly if there is a past history of deep vein thrombosis.

Procedure

Surgeries are done either to remove varicose veins or to close them. Removing or closing varicose veins usually doesn't cause problems with blood flow because the blood starts moving through other veins. We highly recommend you to opt for laser surgery to relieve varicose veins pain. This is the most advanced treatment which cures varicose veins without any pain. This uses light energy to block off a vein, so blood is redirected to unaffected veins.

Varicose Veins Treatment in Bhopal

People suffering from varicose veins live without knowing that they are having this problem, they can’t see the symptoms. The main problem develops when varicose veins start to limit the lifestyle of a person. Varicose veins can become worse with the symptoms such as heaviness in the legs, leg pain and swelling around the ankles while standing for a long duration. This is common in Bhopal, as many people are into sitting jobs or they work the whole day while standing, which are the main reasons for varicose veins. If the varicose veins are not treated on time, ulcers can develop and enlarged veins can cause sudden bleeding. There are chances of clot formation within the dilated vein which can travel towards the heart and can cause blockage in the main artery. According to a study in Bhopal, people suffering from varicose veins, do settle for only temporary solutions like compression stockings, ointments, etc. As the problem is not attended, there are high chances that the problem will recur. The problem is common in policemen and about 10% of policemen in Bhopal are suffering from varicose veins. They ignore this problem, as they don’t get any time for the treatment.
