15 Food To Avoid In Constipation

You have to think a lot before eating anything when you have constipation. There is a list of food to help you get over this problem. Add them to your diet and cut down on other food to avoid constipation. 

Here is the list of food to avoid in constipation

  1. Dairy Products:

    Cheese, full-fat milk, ice cream and other dairy products are said to constipate you. As it turns out, this reputation is well deserved. The high-fat and low-fiber in the dairy product cause constipation. Dairy products made from milk can cause constipation in many individuals, especially babies. Lactose in dairy can cause constipation, gas and bloating. Whereas, probiotics and yogurt may help ease bowel movements. 

  2. Fried Food or Fast Food:

    Oily and greasy food may worsen your constipation. French fries, burgers, doughnuts, etc. are some of the food items that slow down your bowel movements and cause constipation. 

  3. Unripe Banana:

    This has been a topic of debate if bananas are good in constipation or not. For those who are not aware, having unripe bananas can cause constipation as it contains starch that slows down the digestion process and is difficult to digest. Whereas, ripe bananas are helpful during constipation. They make your stool bulky, absorb water and ease your bowel movements. 

  4. Gluten:

    Gluten is protein in wheat and barley. This may not cause constipation to everyone but those who are allergic to it. This is known as celiac disease, so one must avoid gluten products. Talk to the doctor once because even there may be non-celiac gluten sensitivity causing constipation. 

  5. Red Meat:

    There are various reasons to avoid red meat. Red meat causes constipation as it is high in fat so takes longer to digest. It also contains protein fibers that are difficult to digest. Iron in red meat is also responsible for constipation. So, avoid red meat in constipation. 

  6. Caffeine:

    Like bananas, caffeine can act both ways. For a person with dehydration, caffeine can cause constipation. Otherwise, caffeine can make a person have more or excessive stool. 

  7. White Rice:

    There is a difference between white rice and brown rice. All the husk and bran have been removed from the rice i.e all the fiber content is removed from white rice. Brown rice contains all of them so it does not cause constipation. 

  8. Alcohol:

    Alcohol dehydrates causing irritation and digestion problems. 

  9. Refined Sugar:

    Sugar simply affects colon health and contributes to Inflammatory bowel disease (IBS). Refined sugar leads to obesity, is harmful for diabetic patients and it further aggravates constipation. 

  10. Bakery Products:

    White flour bread, cakes, pastries, crackers and all other bakery items are low in fiber and contain high starch. Therefore, avoid bakery products instead go for whole-grain bread. 

  11. Persimmon:

    It is a fruit that is either sweet or astringent that contains high amounts of tannins. It slows down the overall absorption and digestion of the food process further causing constipation. This is a very common fruit in the US. Sweet persimmons are better if you really want to have them. 

  12. Chocolate:

    One of the foods to avoid in constipation is chocolate, especially for those who are suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS). It contains fat that can slow down the digestion. 

  13. Supplements:

    Many people take supplement or deficiency tablets that cause constipation. Therefore, ask your healthcare provider for the food that you can add to your diet to prevent constipation. 

  14. Processed foods:

    Not just oily or fried food, even processed food tends to cause constipation as they contain a lot of salt and fat. 

  15. Chewing gum:

    The reason why children are not advised to eat gum is it may cause constipation if they swallow it. When gum gets along with other undigested food, they block the digestive tract causing constipation. Therefore, if your child eats chewing gum, tell them to spit it out and not to swallow the gum.

In the end, your health is your responsibility. Therefore, to prevent constipation dietary changes are very important. There are food to avoid and some food to include when constipated and bloated. Along with this, you need to make lifestyle changes such as exercise regularly, drink enough water and keep moving to prevent constipation. Still, if you feel the constipation problem persists, consult a doctor. There may be an underlying cause of constipation which you are unable to find out.
