Most patients who come to the clinic for the dental clinic for aligner treatment are already aware that they have some degree of dental misalignment. The treatment usually begins at the consultation stage, where the surgeon assesses the condition of teeth and gums. If the patient has any dental decay or gum disease, then the dentist corrects it before beginning the treatment. 

Then, he will take oral photographs and radiographic scans like lateral cephalograms, X-rays, oral pantomogram (OPG), etc. Finally, they will perform a ClinCheck scan and start fabricating aligners using composite resin materials. Normally, the number of aligner tray sets required for correction can be from 6-48, and each tray may need to be worn for 1-2 weeks, 20-22 hours a day. 

The orthodontist will create button attachments on the buccal surfaces of 1st molars to firmly fix the aligner tray and make sure it does not slip while chewing or speaking. The treatment can last from 8 to 8 months, depending on the amount of correction needed.

For dental aligner treatment, you need to prepare for long-term oral hygiene maintenance. Your first aligner tray may feel very uncomfortable, and it may be difficult for you to figure out the best way to take out the aligners for brushing and tray cleaning. Do not use your nails as they may wound the already sensitive gums and increase the chances of gum bleeding. 

As you get used to the aligner trays, they will become second nature to you and you may even stop noticing their presence. When the treatment is completed, you will be given a choice of retainers, i.e., removable or fixed retainers to maintain the treatment results over a long period of time.

Dental aligners are an elective treatment that is primarily performed for aesthetic correction of dental misalignment, thus they are completely based on the patient’s choice.

• Since patients maintain better oral hygiene with aligners, the chances of the patient developing dental caries or gum disease are much lower.
• Aligners can also be more comfortable than braces, especially as the treatment goes on. Aligner trays are also much less likely to break compared to metal wires.
• Though the patient may have to avoid certain foods to avoid breaking the aligner trays, there are fewer diet restrictions with aligners as compared to patients with fixed braces.
• Due to the sharp edges of metal wires and brackets, they often injure the oral cavity during the first couple of weeks of the treatment, however, since there are no sharp edges to the aligners, they do not injure the oral cavity.

Since the tooth movement is slow and happens gradually over a long period of time, there is almost no adjustment period required. You will have to get a set of retainers, either fixed or removable, to preserve the results of the surgery. Fixed retainers are bonded to the lingual surfaces of the anterior teeth, while removable retainers are wire-resin appliances that have to be worn for a large part of the day for at least a year.

Even after you get the retainers, you should visit your dentist at least once every 6-8 months for follow-up checkups and make sure that your retainers are not bent or broken.
