  • If they can take medicines?
  • Can they bath after the embryo transfer?
  • Is it possible to do intercourse?
  • Can they eat a regular diet or is there any restriction?

All these thoughts are some common questions that can be bothersome for some people, even though people read a lot about IVF treatment - what to do before the embryo transfer and after embryo transfer. Everyone gets the information across the web but still, some concerns are natural.

Here are the Most Common Concerns Post Embryo Transfer:

  1. Will I be Able to Lead a Normal Life?

It is very important for the woman to lead a normal life post IVF treatment in the same way as a woman who leads it with natural pregnancy. Feel relaxed, go for walks, have a well-balanced diet and stay active. Do not take breaks or leave from your work until the doctor suggests. Remember do not perform rigorous exercises, or else you may blame yourself if the embryo fails to stick.

  1. What if there are Cramps after the Embryo Transfer?

Some might fear cramps after embryo transfer as it is similar to the period cramps. But cramps are also the signs of implantation and you may be pregnant. Embryo transfer brings some changes in the reproductive organs as there are medications involved in the procedure.

  1. Can I Take a Bath after the Embryo Transfer?

Some doctors say that warm water baths can be taken following embryo transfer. While others suggest avoiding the beach bath, swimming pool or even spas and saunas for two weeks after embryo transfer. You can take shower. In other words, avoid soaking yourself in water for at least a week after embryo transfer.

  1. How will I know About Pregnancy?

Taking the stress and thinking about pregnancy results won’t help. You will have to wait for two weeks after an embryo transfer. As it causes a lot of stress and anxiety, you may notice some early signs or it can delay in some. Pregnancy tests must be done if you notice light bleeding, spotting or cramping after two weeks. Consult a doctor when you notice these early signs as it may be a successful implantation.

  1. How should I Conduct a Pregnancy test after the Successful Embryo Transfer?

It is important to know when to take the pregnancy test after embryo transfer. Ideally, waiting until you miss your period for a more accurate result. Usually, post embryo transfer, the doctor schedules a follow-up appointment two weeks after the transfer for blood pregnancy test. If you are eager and cannot wait, talk to the doctor to ensure you can use an over-the-counter pregnancy test at home.

  1. Do I have to do Complete Bed Rest?

For working women, complete bed rest is really a concern after embryo transfer. You are going to get a lot of changes in the body so self care is certainly important. All you are advised to do is be gentle to yourself. Do not perform any rigorous activities or exercises. Take proper rest and keep yourself busy. Physical exertion must be avoided.

  1. How will I deal with Stress and Anxiety after the Embryo Transfer?

Avoid taking stress thinking about the pregnancy test after embryo transfer. Although there are no proven studies that say that the result will be negative due to stress.

  1. What will I do if there is any Spotting or Bleeding?

Light spotting is a concern for every woman after embryo transfer and is very common. There can be light spotting at every stage after embryo transfer such as after two weeks of waiting, when embryo implantation takes place. Another reason for bleeding or spotting after embryo transfer can be vaginal progesterone suppositories that can cause cervix to be super sensitive. Hence, if you have intercourse after this, you may notice light spotting.

  1. What if I Conceive Twins after IVF?

There is a hormone produced during pregnancy known as hCG. If you are conceiving twins, your hCG levels will be higher than normal pregnancy. hCG can be detected during  pregnancy testing. But the way to confirm if  you have twins is ultrasound. Early pregnancy tests can bother you if they are negative. But do not assume anything and consult your doctor.

  1. Can I have Sex Post Embryo Transfer?

Usually, doctors deny intercourse during or even in the  complete IVF treatment cycle. They suggest some pelvic rest is important after embryo transfer. There may be uterine contraction which may be a hurdle for embryo transfer. While some doctors think it is fine to have sex after embryo transfer. Therefore, depending on your condition, do as the doctor suggests.

Take away

A woman taking fertility treatment goes through a lot after embryo transfer. There may be symptoms such as abdominal bloating, pain, nausea and vomiting. If it seems like a concern, then consult your doctor to know what you can do.
