Endometriosis is the condition when the tissues that are found on the inner side of the uterus grow on the outer side of it. The tissue lining the uterus is known as the endometrium. The name of the condition is derived from there. 

On an estimation, the condition affects 1 in 10 women during their reproductive years. Mostly, endometriosis is a painful condition that takes place originally in the pelvic area. It is rare for the tissues to spread further past the fallopian tubes, ovaries, or the tissues lining the area of the pelvis.

  • Food items rich in iron, such as green leafy vegetables, broccoli, green beans, fortified grains, nuts, seeds
  • Food items rich in fatty acid like salmon, trout, walnuts, chia and flax seeds
  • Antioxidant-rich foods, which include juicy, colorful fruits and vegetables, like oranges, berries, spinach, beets.

Make sure to pay attention to how your body reacts when you change your diet to certain foods. Make a note of the foods you eat and look for any symptoms you feel when having a certain diet. Discuss it with your gynecologist for the best results.

Foods to avoid while having Endometriosis are:

  • High trans fat in the diet should be avoided. There are several kinds of research that have found higher rates of an endometriosis diagnosis in women with more trans fat in their diet. Trans fat is found in – fried food, processed food items, and fast foods. 
  • Consumption of red meat has also been associated with high risks of consumption of endometriosis. There is an increased risk of endometriosis development with a diet including a high intake of red meat. 
  • Another food item found harmful for patients with endometriosis is gluten. A study that had 207 females with endometriosis had shown that 75 percent of the patients had a decrease in pain after removing gluten from their diet. 


Foods that can have an effect on hormone regulation, especially estrogen balance, can have a negative effect on endometriosis. Moreover, avoid or strictly restrict foods that may promote inflammation in the body and can cause pain or progression of the disorder. Make sure to say a big No to such foods that include: : 

  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Caffeinated drinks
  • Gluten
  • Red meat
  • Saturated and trans fat
