After the embryo transfer, the female has to be extra cautious regarding her health and the activities she does. Most women have a common concern related to embryo transfer - "Is it okay to travel after embryo transfer?"

Travelling can help you get rid of IVF stress

Travel can help a couple undergoing IVF treatment escape some amount of stress that the whole treatment journey brings along. Stress is one of the most triggering factors for the reproductive system. IVF is a very stressful journey, and when a woman goes through it, the stressful phases can often lead to abnormalities in her body. Infertility specialists often suggest that the better a woman can manage the stress in her life, the better prognosis can be seen. A relaxing trip or a get away can help the woman get rid of the everyday stressors to a great extent, but that should be done with proper precautions.

Is it okay to travel after embryo transfer?

Just because you are on a fertility treatment, does not mean that your life comes to a halt. You can plan trips and go for vacation. Just that you need to make the preparations well and consider a few important things.

First thing first - do not plan any trips that would collide with your doctor visits or appointments. IVF treatment, especially after the embryo transfer requires frequent monitoring which includes several blood tests and ultrasounds. These visits are very important to monitor the development of the fetus and to track any abnormalities in the process.

If you have travel plans, inform your doctor.  If you need to make any travel plans during certain parts of your treatment, especially after the embryo transfer, consult with your doctor and find a way to work around last-minute plans, family emergency or the important corporate meeting.

Travel after Embryo Transfer

It is normal to get worried about doing anything after the embryo transfer. But there have been no cases or incidents which show that resuming normal day-to-day activities after the embryo transfer has any kind of negative impact on the pregnancy.

There are no travel restrictions while waiting for the pregnancy test. However, it is recommended that once the pregnancy is successful, the female should not take long flights to travel to rough destinations until the next few ultrasounds are done to assess the location and viability of the pregnancy. These tests are usually done after 2-3 weeks of confirming the pregnancy.

In early pregnancy, there is a high risk of blood clots. These can turn into a serious complication if the woman travels to unruly destinations just after the embryo transfer. Prolonged travel and frequent trips can increase the risk. So, it is extremely important to limit travelling to minimize such risks.

What to do before you make travel plans?

Before you make your travel plans, make sure to have a discussion with your doctor. Make sure that the trip plans do not interfere with your personal fertility plan.

On the other hand, it is always advised that you check the WHO and CDC official websites to know the travel guidelines and alerts for pregnant women. You can also speak with the customer executives of the flight you are planning to take and understand the travel rules and regulations, if any. Owing to the global coronavirus pandemic, it is extremely important for any pregnant woman to take extra precautions while travelling with other passengers.

How to Prepare for Travel plans after the Embryo Transfer?

There are a few things that a woman needs to do extra or a little more while planning for a trip. Your plans are made and your tickets are done, but that's not all. Here are a few more things to do.

  1. Know about fertility care centers or support at your destination

If you are undergoing IVF treatment or if you are pregnant, you might require medical support any time during your travel. You can either research and get in touch with fertility support centers at the destination which you are travelling to or ask your doctor for a recommendation. You need to make sure every help is available, just in case you face any trouble while you are away from your doctor.

  1. Travel vaccines

Before you travel, speak to your fertility expert and get the required travel vaccinations. Ideally, one should get the vaccinations for typhoid and hepatitis before travelling. Your doctor is the best person to let you know which vaccines are necessary during your IVF cycle and embryo transfer.

  1. Stock up your medications

If you have travel plans, speak to your fertility specialist and stock up all the medicines that you might require while travelling. There may be restrictions for tourists or people coming from other states or countries, so get everything that you might need before you embark on your trip.

  1. Carry a note from your doctor

Ask your doctor to give you a written note that explains which medicines you need to take while travelling. If you need to take any injection during the trip, this is even more important in that case.

  1. Keep necessary contacts handy

Save all the important numbers on your mobile. a smart thing to do here is if you are travelling alone, write all the contact numbers in a diary and if you are travelling with your partner or friend, share the most important contact numbers on his or her mobile too. You never know when things might go wrong.

  1. Know your airline’s medication policy

Every airline has their own medication policies. While travelling by some airlines, you may need to carry the medicines in a particular type of bag, while other airlines may ask you to carry the medicines and syringes in luggage bags. You can either check the official website of the airline to know the travel guidelines or contact the customer helpline number and speak to an executive.
