Effective Ways to Treat Vaginal Yeast Infections

A yeast infection in a vagina or vaginal candidiasis is a fungal infection which causes irritation, discharge and intense itchiness of the vagina and the vulva. A vaginal yeast infection isn't exactly a sexually transmitted infection. But, there's an increased risk of vaginal yeast infection at the time of first regular sexual activity. The infection may occur due to mouth to genital contact (oral-genital sex) also. Medications can effectively treat vaginal yeast infections

Treatment

Every yeast infection is different, so your doctor will recommend a treatment that’s suitable for you. Treatments are usually based on the frequency and severity of your symptoms.

Short-term medications: Your doctor may give you an antifungal medication for three to seven days to clear a yeast infection. Antifungal medications are available as creams, ointments, tablets, and suppositories. These medications are available by a prescription or an over-the-counter form.

Common medications include:

Single-dose oral medication: Your doctor may recommend a one-time, single oral dose of fluconazole (Diflucan). Oral medication isn't suggested when you're pregnant. To deal with more severe symptoms, you may take two single doses three days apart.

Consult your doctor again if treatment doesn't resolve your symptoms or if your symptoms return back.

In case, your symptoms are severe, or you are getting frequent yeast infections, your doctor may suggest:

Long-term medication: Your doctor may prescribe you an antifungal medication taken daily for up to two weeks, then after once a week for six months.

Multidose oral medication: Your doctor might give two or three doses of antifungal medication to be taken orally. But, this therapy isn't recommended for pregnant women.

Azole antifungal: Your doctor might prescribe boric acid, a capsule inserted into your vagina. This medication can be fatal if taken orally and is used only to treat Candida fungus that is resistant to the normal antifungal agents.

You may try to treat vaginal yeast infections with natural remedies also; however, these aren’t as effective or reliable as the indicated medications. Some popular natural remedies include:
