Is your child complaining of tremendous pain in the ear? Is your child regularly pulling the ear? Is there a fever? Then let me tell you that all these symptoms are of an infection in the ear.

As a parent, it is normal to get worked up if the kid is crying continuously and complaining of pain in the ears. Take your kid to an ENT doctor without any further delay. Until then, here are a few remedies, especially for kids belonging to the age group of 7 to 12 that can help them get relief from the pain.

    1. Apply a warm/cold compress

To reduce pain around the ear and the neck region in your kid, you can use a warm towel compress for 15 minutes. But remember that the kid’s skin is much more sensitive than adults. Hence, make sure that the towel is not too warm. You can use a warm towel, or heating pad or a plastic bottle filled with warm water.

If a warm compress is not working, you can also use a cold towel. Avoid applying ice directly to the skin as this can restrict blood flow in the ears. To apply a cold compress, wrap a few ice cubes in a towel or waterproof bag. Be patient with your kid while applying the compress as applying heat or cold to the ear can be frightening to the kid. To make things easier, you can talk with your kid first. (Also Read: Home Remedies For Baby Ear Infection )

  1. Basil leaves

    a cup of basil water
This is one of the major ingredients that is widely used for preparing Ayurvedic medicines. According to Ayurveda, the juices of basil leaves are packed with anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties that not only cures ear pain but also alleviates symptoms of ear infection.

To get the benefits of basil, crush a few leaves with a mortar and pestle. Put a few drops of this juice into the ear to get relief from the pain. However, even after putting this juice there are no signs of improvement, consult with an ENT doctor.

  2. Olive oil

    three bowls of olive oil
This is the most effective holistic remedy for curing earache in children. The reason being olive oil is rich in anti-inflammatory properties as well as large amounts of antioxidants.

Therefore, if the earache in your child is due to an ear infection, this is the best option. You can use olive oil by heating a small quantity in a pan to room temperature or a little warmer.

Instead of putting the oil directly into the ear, you can apply the warm oil around and inside the ear. But if you suspect symptoms of a ruptured eardrum such as ringing in the ears or hearing loss, avoid this remedy absolutely.

  3. Garlic

Garlic cloves in a wooden bowl
Using garlic doesn’t mean that you put the garlic cloves directly into the ear. Garlic is loaded with medicinal benefits. Curing inflammation due to an infection in any part of the body is one of them. You can crush few garlic cloves and mix the juice with some sesame or olive oil.

  4. Mustard oil

Mustard oil in a bowl with seeds
The ear is self-cleansing. In normal conditions, it clears out the excess earwax to prevent a build-up.

But sometimes when the ear fails to do this, this leads to a build-up that can harden the earwax. This gives rise to pain in the ear, especially in children.

Mustard oil can help in such cases. Warm-up a few drops of mustard oil and put it inside the ear so that the wax melts thereby, opening the blockage. If there is any foreign object also, the mustard oil can remove it. Remember not to heat up the oil too much as this can burn inside the ear.

  5. Massage with Eucalyptus oil

    Eucalyptus leaves with oil
All remedies we have discussed until now mainly talks about applying the remedy. But this one is different.

Massage the ear and neck region in a downward movement with eucalyptus oil with a carrier oil to get relief from pain inside the ear.

Eucalyptus oil is strong in nature and has a pungent smell. As mentioned earlier, children’s skin is far more soft and sensitive, hence don’t massage with eucalyptus oil directly. Some easily available carrier oils so that you dilute the oil are- coconut oil, sesame oil, or olive oil.

  6. Salt

    Salt from a jar
You can make a ‘salt sock’ for naturally alleviating earache in infants or young children. Similar to a warm compress, the sock works as a natural heating pad. The warmth from the sock can help get relief from the pain due to an infection.

To make this pack, take a cup of an uncooked grain into a thick cotton sock and add a tablespoon of Kosher or sea salt. Microwave this mixture for 30 to 60 seconds. Check that the sock is not too hot as this can cause skin burn in kids.

  7. Acetaminophen

This remedy only works for infants over 6 months. Also known as Tylenol, this can help get relief from pain and fever that are caused by an ear infection. Although it is a home remedy, it is best to use it only after proper consultation with an ENT doctor. However, you can use acetaminophen for your kid if you ensure that you follow the instructions of the bottle properly. (Also Read: Home Remedies For Baby Ear Infection )

Prevention for earache in kids

Children suffer from earache mainly due to infections in the ear. Fortunately, there are some preventive measures that can reduce the risk of infections of the ear in kids. Some of them are discussed below-

Breast milk consists of various antibodies that help to build the immune system of the baby by fighting off infections. Therefore, breastfeed your baby for six to twelve months.

Avoid exposure to cigarette smoke

Make sure that the baby is away from cigarette smoke as this makes the baby more susceptible to these infections.

Avoid unhealthy environment

Prevent visiting places where people are suffering from cold or flu or bugs around. Bugs can get inside the ears and cause discomfort.

Timely immunizations

The best way to avoid infection is to make sure that the child gets its timely shots to include flu shots and pneumococcal vaccines.

Wash hands regularly

This preventive measure will prevent the bacteria from spreading and ultimately, preventing any infection.

Final words

Simple-yet effective remedies can help for quick relief. If the pain sustains for over a week after using home remedies, take your doctor to an ENT doctor as this can be a serious issue such as perforation of the eardrum or deep infections.
