1. Belladonna

The extract of this medicine is derived from the leaf and root of a plant that bears a five-lobed flower that produces cherry-looking berries. 

This medicine cures ear problems that occur suddenly and makes the person red in the face. Listening to any noise can make the ear pain worse. The patient may be running a very high fever also. The medicine can cure other symptoms such as dullness, drowsiness, and lethargy.

However, the Food and Drug Administration doesn’t recommend the use of Belladonna extract for curing ear infections. 

2. Chamomilla

This is considered to be the safest medicine to use out of all the prescribed homeopathic medicines. 

For getting relief from the pain due to an ear infection that is sharp, pinching and occurs suddenly, this medicine is prescribed. 

Although it is considered safe, it is beneficial to take some precautionary measures. The reason being that this medicine can have sedentary effects when taken with other supplements.

3. Ferrum phosphoricum

This medicine for earache is generally prescribed in the initial stages of the problem. If the patient is not feverish, then this medicine acts as a quick remedy for short term conditions. 

4. Hepar sulfur

This homeopathic medicine for earache is prescribed when the person is extremely sensitive to cold air, touch or even noise. The ear gets infected when it gets exposed to any of the above factors. This medicine is used to cure ear pain in adults when the infection becomes extremely advanced. 

The person who requires this medicine is usually sensitive to everything and feels vulnerable and touchy. 

5. Mercurius sol

When the ear infection becomes advanced such that it results in the discharge of pus, piercing pain, or roaring in the ear, then this homeopathic medicine for earache is recommended. This medicine needs to be taken very carefully as this contains mercury which is poisonous in nature. Mercury toxicity can lead to other problems such as nervous system disorders, problems in the kidneys, liver, and hair. 

6. Pulsatilla

An ear infection that occurs after a cold can be cured by this homeopathic medicine. Other symptoms that can be healed with this medicine include swelling and warming up of the ears. In addition to this, there is a feeling that something is being pressed out. The pain gets worse in the evening and at night. There can be deep itching inside the ear also. 

This is a flower that is used in homeopathy to treat earaches. The part of the flower that stays above the soil is used for preparing the dried pulsatilla. 

The usual dosage of this homeopathic supplement is three times a day either in tea or in the dried preparation. 

This homeopathic medicine can cause skin disorders or localized irritation. Therefore, it is recommended to take this medicine under supervision. 

7. Xylitol 

This is a type of natural sugar that is commonly found in fruits. For commercial purposes, it is used as an added sweetener. This works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. 

Several middle ear infections occur when there is an accumulation of bacteria in the Eustachian tubes that connect the nose and ears. Hence, several experts believe that xylitol can prevent infection from developing by restricting bacterial growth inside the ear. 

According to a research study in Finland, the regular consumption of xylitol in any form (gum, lozenges, syrup) reduced the risk of middle ear infections in children by 25%. 

Some other homeopathic medicines that doctors recommend are-

    • Aconitum napellus- This medicine can relieve out earaches due to infections in the ear. 
    • Kali muriaticum- This helps to get relief from congestion in the ear with cracking sounds in the ear.
    • Magnesia phosphorica- This is also a homeopathic medicine that can cure earache in adults. 

Effectiveness of Homeopathic Medicines for Earache

According to one study in which 38 children and young adolescents suffering from acute ear infections were evaluated to check the effectiveness of Pulsatilla D2. The results revealed that the effectiveness of the medicines was not up to the mark as expected. 

 

However, there is no particular study or research so far which could support the effectiveness of the medicines.

 

In another study, the effectiveness of standard treatment was compared with homeopathic treatment. But the study didn’t provide any relevant results as the participants were not blind-folded about the research study.

 

Both studies failed to provide sufficient data to confirm the effectiveness of homeopathic medicines of earache in adults. 

Side effects of Homeopathic Medicines for Earache

Due to lack of studies,  no major side effects of homeopathic medicines for earache have been reported. However, just like other medicines, skipping a dose or an overdose can cause some problems. Even if no side effects have been reported, it is always better to talk with the doctor first before using these medicines.
