Recovery After Arthroscopy Surgery - An Overview

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure to diagnose and treat painful joint problems. It is usually performed for weight-bearing joints like the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, hip, and wrist joint. It is the most preferred surgical approach as it provides quicker recovery with minimal complications.

On average, recovery after arthroscopy takes up to a week to a few months and may vary for each individual depending on the underlying health conditions, the organ treated, the severity of the condition, and the age of the patient.

To make the treatment successful, it is important to make some lifestyle modifications and adopt dietary changes.

Recovery Timeline and What to Expect After Arthroscopy

The recovery may seem different for each patient depending on the above-discussed factors. Here’s a general timeline of the recovery after arthroscopy surgery.

Week 1:

Following 1 week after arthroscopy, you will experience some pain and stiffness in the affected joint, especially during the first few days In the first week, you should apply ice to reduce swelling. You should take pain medications prescribed by your orthopedic doctor. You may need to use crutches to help with mobility; physical therapy may also be recommended.

Week 2:

In the second week following arthroscopy, swelling will be reduced, and pain will be minimal. You may be able to begin light exercises, such as gentle stretching and walking. If a brace or joint cap has been prescribed, you should wear it as recommended.

Week 3:

During week three, start doing light exercises but take proper rest as well. The doctor may recommend to increase your physical activity level, and you can start physical therapy. You can now able to begin using the affected joint more normally.

Week 4:

In the fourth week following arthroscopy, you feel more strength in the affected joint. The doctor may recommend further physical therapy to help restore full range of motion and strength. Now, you can use the affected joint more normally, but should take care to avoid any strenuous activities.

Week 5 and After:

In the fifth week and after that, you will be fully recovered from arthroscopy. Now, you will be able to resume normal activities. You may need to continue physical therapy to ensure proper healing and to prevent any further complications.

Diet to Follow During Arthroscopy

If you are planning to undergo arthroscopy, it is important to pay special attention to your diet. Eating the right foods and drinks can help optimize your recovery, reduce inflammation, and minimize postoperative pain.

  • Before the surgery

Increase your intake of anti-inflammatory foods such as fatty fish, nuts, and fruits and vegetables. This will help reduce inflammation and decrease your chances of postoperative complications.

  • After the surgery

It is important to focus on getting adequate nutrition. Eating nutrient-rich foods such as lean proteins, legumes, and whole grains will help to fuel your body and aid in recovery. Additionally, consuming foods high in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, may help reduce inflammation. It is also important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. This can help reduce swelling and flush out toxins.

You should also limit your consumption of processed foods, sugary snacks, and caffeinated beverages, as these can interfere with your body’s ability to recover.

By following a healthy diet during and after arthroscopy, you can help ensure a successful recovery. Eating a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water can help reduce inflammation, minimize postoperative pain, and improve your healing process.

Exercises After Arthroscopy Surgery

Exercising after arthroscopy surgery is important to help you make a full recovery. Here are some general guidelines to follow when beginning your post-surgery exercises:

  • Begin slowly with light exercises such as walking. Start with short distances and gradually increase the length of your walks as you feel comfortable.
  • Increase range of motion in your joints by doing stretching exercises. Focus on the areas that have been operated on and take things slowly.
  • Strengthen the muscles around the joint by doing exercises like squats and calf raises.
  • If your doctor has prescribed physical therapy, follow the prescribed exercises to ensure a successful recovery.
  • Do not push yourself too hard. Give yourself enough time to rest and recover between exercises.
  • Listen to your body. If you experience any pain or discomfort, stop the exercise and contact your doctor.

Following these guidelines can help ensure that you make a successful recovery from your arthroscopy surgery. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions and to not overexert yourself. The key is to be consistent and to take things slow. With time and patience, you are able to make a fast and healthy full recovery.
